This is a great site, and has saved my bacon already just reading the postings which are always better than the sterile manuals. I have restored vintage Alfa's, Mercedes LandRovers , and a BMW R90s. so to me a 1986 VF 500 is darn near 21'st century engineering with wow-no points-no oil gasket leaks-no lucas nightmares. So after being given a dry basement (but rank) 1986 VF500 with 18K, I figured i'd try Japanese enginnering for grins and have fun riding on a 500 to boot. Hopefully I can help out on general tech issues while tackling the 500 to keep it bone stock and running. I guess my first real inquiry to the VFR gurus would be : overall what is the general "personality" of these bikes...reliablity, "fixability", quirks, predictable goods and bads to expect, etc. I could write this for Alfa's ,Landrovers , even for R series BMW's. But no clue on this bike, and I have zero assumptions about anything, even after reading the posts. Thanks for reading.

parts kind of hard to find. stay on top of cam chain issues. i don't think it was bad on the 500 but it's worth noting. find the 1st gen forum and read everything in there for the last 5 years... that should get you ready.
