    Hi guys,
Back on bikes after a few years off.
I'm 36, from Ireland, live in Dublin, drive a CB500...
...but have a lovely 99 VFR800 with an even nicer busted gearbox!

Bought the VFR for when the restriction is up, (bout 18 months time).
Should know it inside out by then...

    Anywhooo... Howya!

Welcome aboard!! When you say restriction what do you mean?
And that's a great looking bike.

    hey comicus,
    thanks for the welcome...

in ireland, when you pass your driving test, you can only drive a bike with <33hp or 25kWt for 2 years before you can ride a full-power bike.
all manufacturers produce bikes specifically for ireland... i.e. with factory restriction. you can (of course) get an after-market restriction, but only from approved garages. its about $400
you can purchase full-power or restricted versions of most bikes...

oh, btw, you dont have to, but if your less than 21 & you want to drive a bike, you can only drive one of 11kw first!!! ive had to sit & complete two tests. one when i was 18 & one this year for the "big bikes"

ireland has the highest death rate for bikers in europe... & the least % of riders!!!!!!

    hope this explains

Yeah I thought it had something to do with that. In the states we are allowed to kill ourselves as fast as we want. When I took my riding test the guy said "drive up that hill and circle around and come back the parking lot.". I asked "do you want me to stop then start again on that hill" and he said "no. To many people failed that portion of the test so we stopped doing that." that's the American way...it was hard so we're not going to do it.

    thats good alright!!!
its the same here for cages.... you do your test in a civic & hop straight into a ferrari!

oh, and irish driving standards are appalling! you can drive here on a learner permit for 3 years without EVER having a lesson!!!

    Hi!

    Hey mrich12k,
    Thanks for the welcome.
I havent stripped it yet, as I only have it about 4 days & I'm still trying to find somewhere to store it close to home... But I'm told first gear is f**ked.
When you turn over the engine, it grinds like a bag o' spanners in a washing machine!

However, the guy I bought it off (on Welcome to Biker.ie, Ireland's Premier Motorbike Forum), is seriously good with stuff & helping people on the site put me in touch with ANOTHER guy who's trans has 3rd gear smashed... (sound like a scam, huh? - lol)

So, I'm hoping to drop my trans & graft anything I need from the spare one.
I know I wont really know until I actually strip it, but sure I have over a year to get it back on the road. I'm actually looking forward to the challenge!

I'll be posting pics & vid link when it's stripped.
The seller asked me to take pics for him.

Thanks for the offer, if it's ok, I'll let you know how I'm doing & any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Paul

Well, it was, once! Unfortunately not anymore... 

We've a government here that would put the Italian mafia to shame!

All that's left for fun is my two wheels! And it's only a matter of time before they tax that out of reach!
