When I got my bike I only had 1 key. I've been meaning to get it copied forever, but have not had the time. Am I screwed at this point? Do I need to remove the lock cyl (similar to what I had to do on my Hawk GT), take it to the Honda dealer, and get a new key made that way? If so, I may just run a push button switch that requires a 4 digit code to turn on. "Transporter" style. Any recommendations on what can be done?

    Thanks...

if you steering stem isn't locked; yes, you need to remove the lock cylinder and get the code off of it. You will likely be able to go to a local locksmith to have a new one made with your code. Honda doesn't have a master list that has key codes by vin#. And, most dealers don't cut keys anyway. If they did, they'd charge you too much for it.

When you get the code, find out if you need to take your bike paperwork with you to the locksmith. Some states require this. Emphasis on locksmith, who may even have to order blanks. Big box stores are great for regular keys but vehicle keys are a bit more difficult to get.

Your local friendly dealer might offer you ten bucks tradein on your bike since it isn't running..;)

good point billy. I forgot about that one.

For some reason I don't recall having to prove ownership on one of the bikes I needed a key for but I for dam sure did on my truck this fall. Locked the keys in the diesel up on the mountain while hunting. I am a dumbass. Tough to prove ownership when all the papers are locked in the truck. Fortunately I was able to log into Chryslerfinancial.com to show my loan account that had the VIN # associated with it.

Interesting.. Never got asked about the cars and making spares that was in WA. Spares for the bikes in Oregon. Same locksmith for three bikes and he needed to see the paperwork. Gotta be a diference from state to state.

The key mechanism in the 91 VFR wore down and the grip on the key was getting flaky. I come home one day, put the bike away in the garage and whoops! no key. It went MIA.. Seat lock was locked too.. Had a spare in the house. Whew.. I swaged a length of stainless cable to the bars and to a two part key thing. I priced out a new lock and tumbler at my friendly dealer and didn't even get asked if I wanted some KY Jelly to go with the deal.

Bottom line? Having a few spares made up is a hell of lot better than some of the alternatives..

Just to confirm-Is it a Hiss model? 98s have no HISS over here.

Honda Ignition Security System, as in an embedded chip in the key.

Glad to hear you found your key.
I lost mine about 2 months ago.
Did a write up on here titled 'Key lost help' with some photos.
I removed the ignition barrel which was easier than I thought. Only needed some Torx fittings Repco) and 2 extensions for my 3/8 socket set.
