I am new to these bikes, I wanted a sport tourer and went to my dealer to look at a 2006 Suzuki Katana he had on his web site...he says you don't want that, you want this...and he shows me a pristine clean red 99 VFR 800, bone stock with helibars, and tint sheild, 15,000 miles and new Dunlops plus he threw in a stainless Jardine slip on....I fell in love at first sight, it's too cold to ride here in Indiana but have got to take one little ride while in the 40's outside...very impressive machine and I love the whine of the gear driven cam...I am pretty sure I made the right call over the Katana.

I think you made the right decision, the more you ride the more you will be impressed with the bike.

You made the right choice. Also, I think that when buying used, finding a stock bike is a bonus. More than likely, nothing odd was done to it and you get to modify it the way YOU want it. I am a previous 5th Gen owner and you will love this bike. Congratulations.

Yep....I love the looks of the machine, Probably won't do much more than what it has plus the slip-on, I'd love to configure an easy on and eazy off backrest for when the wife goes for a ride, I'd seen the Corbin Gentry gunfighter setup but thats a little too salty a price for me, wouldn't mind a simple rack and then fabricate an eazily removable short backrest, anyone ever tried that?

    Stewart,

You are absolutely right about the resale of a "stock" unmolested bike.

As a former Honda sales mgr. I can attest to this fact.

People who molest their bikes, like chopping part of the rear fender off

or changing pipes don't realize that most buyers want a stock machine.

A stock 5th generation bike today, is like finding a rare jewel :boobies4:

Cool. I always thought that I was in the minority for thinking that way. One of my criteria for buying used is that it must be stock - especially for the older bikes. Try finding the stock exhaust for an '86 VF1000R. The only way you're going to get it is if it comes with the bike. I've passed on buying a number of them over the years because they only had the aftermarket exhaust.

Yea just got into sport touring this year with my first 98' vfr in red too. You will like it very much. Honda reliability.
And Katana's are for Nancy Boys anyway.

    Welcome !
I have a '99 VFR800 that I actually bought from a guy after he had torn it down completely to sell after it had gotten caught in hurricane IKE. The wiring harness was eaten to hell and he had already sold the CDI, but I put the whole lot back together and now I absolutely love the bike. It still has watermarks on the side of the engine! Let that be a tribute to Honda build quality. It shares my affections with an '02 CBR1100xx Blackbird (which is basically a sister model), an '03 Hayabusa and a '10 Hyosung GT250R and I can guarantee you that the VFR is FAR more comfortable than any of the others.
The must have mods I'd recommend above the Corbin & the slipon are a set of the knock-off Pazzos and a Power Commander III. The levers because they make braking feel so much more precise and the Power Commander because it does wonders to smooth out the low end lumpiness of the VFR800. (That plus the new accelerator pump feature has a more marked effect on the VFR800 than any other bike I have tried it on)

what do have your accelerator pump set at, I just put new headers and pipe on mine and a pc iii, but still have snow so I cant ride it yet. I am having it mapped on a dyno in the next couple months but would like to know how you set up your fuel accelerator pump, I understand the extra percentage of fuel setting but I dont understand the rpm I would just like an idea of a good starting point , if you have any suggestions or would be willing to tell me what yours is set at and what it does, I basicly want the bike to pull very hard when I twist the throttle fast at any speed and act normal when twieting the throttle normal.
