Thanks for all the input guys..more info and maybe some questions answered.

Yes, in MD they spray salt everywhere..but I did not feel as if it would be a problelm.

OK...maybe cold tires and new tires? Maybe a bit aggressive on accel, but remember I had a new Ducati Monster at one time and they stick to the road pretty damn well...

The dealer DID warn me not to expect Ducati handling because of the Honda tire compound...harder because it is a sport tourer. But I swear my HD Superglide would have not gone down in the same situation..but who knows..I was on the VFR..LOL.

My Ducati Superbike riding buddy reminded me that when I was on my Ducati I usually hit 40 MPH turns at 80 and scraped the pegs? Well maybe not, but I never did a track day and really should not push the envelope..

Crap..I am 58 years old...what was I thinking...I am glad traffic was non existent because at the intersection on a busy day I probably would have been run over.

OK..tires..I think they are Dunlops..not sure because the bike is in the shop now and I cannot run out and check.

Protective gear: Helmet is modular full face HJC
Jacket: Harley Davidson textile jacket with very good armor in all the right places
Pants: Alpine Stars Street Cargo with lining and armor installed
    Boots: Alpine Stars Ridge Waterproof
Gloves: Harley Davidson leather insulated gauntlet cold weather gloves...$80.00 a set.

All the gear worked well...I was sort of enjoying sliding along the pavement pain free. I was happy I did not break or sprain anything..a miracle maybe? I guess I was not really going that fast..but the bike and i slid at least 25 yards...maybe 50? Not sure..I did not call the police for a report. I wanted to get the bike off the road and home..LOL.

So how much more will my insurance be now??? I now pay about $35.00 per month.

Well at least since the bike is in the shop they can install my new HeliBars on her...LOL

Well it looks like the dumbass Brits think thier tyres need to be run in for about 100 miles too. IMO we should send Norkelboy our tekeneckel emissery to that heathen land to strighten them out. Or, maybe China and he could stop off in Manilla and buy some more of that Filipina nookie.

I see the problem now. Your riding a Honda with Harley gear on. Honda's don't like that and she just spit you off of her back because of that. Otherwise she would have to hang her bars in shame if seen in public by other bikes!

Glad your ok. She must have been gentle with you. Buy new duds and you'll be fine. Unless they have HD written on them.

I completely agree with Grey. Your HD gear may have caused the intuitive response system (IRS) of the VFR to disagree with your prior choice in bikes. This could have easily caused the situation at hand.

In all seriousness now, I'm glad you are okay and seem to have made it out of that pretty lucky. I know the geniuses in GA put sand and light gravel mix in with what they put down on the roads. I took mine out the other day to check the roads and they are still slick on cold tires, thus any roads I really want to travel are off limits until I replace my stock rubbers.
I've got right around 5 and I do a mix of slabbing and twistie's (Atlanta is hard to get anywhere without some slabbing)
The compound mix of touring tires is definitely different from total sport tires, although now that I am used to them I love them and they get 10x's the wear of a sport tire.

New tires aren't nearly as expensive as new fairings so now that I've broken in the bike without breaking too much it's time for some new ones. I've found some good tires out there for around $200 a set.

Good luck with the fixing but did I understand you to say that you reported it to your insurance? If so, was there any extensive damage besides the fairings?

Thanks for the info and don't forget to EBAY that HD shit......HA

There are sport-touring tires that hold the road for most ability levels, and there are sport-touring tires that don't. OEM tires on a VFR fall into the latter definition. To prevent wasted mileage, I changed out the OEM's for M3's at the 800 mile mark.

mine is no stranger to the pavement. As of the new paint I have not kissed the tarmac. I did retain the same clutch lever though, not bent, pretty much like yours with the ball end half ground down Ö Maybe you fix the rashed body work and ride. If you got your health you got everything, lucky to come out of it with nothing more than some rashed up body work. Cheers and keep the rubber side down.

Yes...new tires will be had. The stock tires are pathetic. Never should have lost traction in my situation.

Next time you're at the track, talk to the tire techs and see what they say.

What if they say you're full of shit and they get free nookie from the umbrella girls?

I think it fair to point out that everyone does not "do" track days or go to roadraces and to catergorize some bike tires with all bike tires is presumptious.

Always there will be a first...

Terrible. At least you got your "first drop" of that bike out of the way. Good to hear that you didn't get hurt.

I picked up the keys for my 2006 after paying for the bike... walked outside, started it and wanted to move it to a parking space. I stopped at the space, put the kickstand down... didn't realize it was on an incline. Hopped of the bike just to watch the kickstand fold up and it roll back and fall on me. You got some miles on mine, I didn't even ride mine yet :)

It was a bit strange to handle the bike compared to my other, a 1974 CB350F1. That thing was light, low and easy to move around.

Oh! I had a nearly similar accident on the 2nd day of riding my 06' VFR, too... I was changing lanes from a merging lane onto the highway and slid the back end out about 30 ft, I didn't crash it, though, but I was very, very close. I didn't even pull the throttle too hard... it surprised the hell out of me. Tires weren't warm, it was a cold morning and the bike has pretty old tires that I should replace soon...

    Live and learn.

Damn thats to bad but glad your ok and were wearing gear. Id be sick if I dropped or wrecked my VFR. Have you taken any riding courses. Ive been riding 40 + years but every 3 yrs I go take a advanced riders class just to make sure Im still capable of handling my bike properly lol. Plus sharpen my skills by practicing evasive maneuvers when time allows. Where you getting your insurance? 35 a month is 410 a year. Im 48 and have full coverage with 250.00 deductibles and I only pay 220.00 a year through progressive.

Just thank god it was a low sided dump at slow speeds and some one was able to help and you could ride the bike home. It could of been a high side at high speeds with no one seeing you and not being able to go home cause you would be in the back of the ambulance with a EMT giving you compressions cause you have no pulse. Anytime your able to walk away and ride away, just be thankful!!!!

BTW That's Paul Simon. Still sucks when something like this happens to a brand new bike. Dropped mine in my garage at 2 weeks old with 2800k on the bike. Boy was I pissed at my stupidity.

wow, I almost lost my bike doing about 55 a couple of weeks ago, I think it's got something to do with the new tires and it seems as though my tires like to try to stand me up when I hit the brakes which kinda succk when there's a light right after a slight turn, I've taken a right instead of stopping one time because of it and did a big circle, but when I almost bit it, it was probably mid 30's f and I had about 300 miles on my new 07 vfr, it started to lose the rear end which is when I kinda straightened out and let off the throttle a bit and it started tracking back but my stomach was in my chest by that point, thought I was gonna throw up in my helmet, and then the releif and adreneline kicked in and I was shaking when I took off my gear and I couldn't even get my bike into the garage for about 30 minutes cause I was chaking so bad, only experience will make you a better rider!

Well you guys are all talking about similar things...losing traction on the rear tire...I have to believe that there is no problem with the engineering on this bike. My Ducatis and my HD...never had that problem...

Harley's rarely have that type problem since they spend most of thier time parked in the shops. This according to time/motion studies.

I bet it was the liquid antifreeze shit they are dumping on the roads now a days, when it drys it leaves a powdery residue.

I really think it was the shiny new tires and coldness that caused my slippage, there didn't seem to be much on the road and on the same stretch of road with similar temp, there was no problem hooking up with the road after riding the bike around for a while to get the tires broken in. the metzelers that came attached to my 07 rwb does kinda seem to not want to take the turns too hard, it's a bit slow but I guess I should take it slow anyway with a brand new bike, I'd hate to lay down a bike for the first time on a new bike...
