Sorry about your noises, but another powerful example that VFRs after '97 were not as reliable over the long run.

Not all progress and redesign is good .....or real progress. Some think the switch away from gear driven cams was only a cost saving move and certainly made a less reliable engine.

Honda made too many models on which the ccts were recurrent problems. Wouldn't be a real big issue IF they were easy or cheap to replace.

"Gear drive or forget about it," i say, since you DID ask for opinions.

Many people have had good luck with the APE tensioners, I'm planning on picking up a pair myself. Some others have also had luck with different oil in their machines. To each his own I suppose, but I wanna repair the problem permenantely, I say go for the APE manual tensioners, I'm gonna.

I'm toying with the idea of installing the APE tensioner on my '04 too... guess I'm wondering how does a person know how to adjust them? I've been on their site and couldn't find any adjustment info. Can't be good to have them to tight, or loose. Can anyone shed some light on the matter?

I've been told by one person that you set them "snug" static and then run the engine and "re-snug" the adjuster and lock it down. I'm not sure if anyone here has done the swap yet, but I would assume someone has. I know that a couple people have done the swap on the other site. I was planning on pming a few members over there that have done theirs to get more instructions. Then again, it may be just as good as asking them what oil and tires to buy......

Ok, that's something to go by. Was kind of wondering if a person needed to listen for any particular sound when making the final adjustments with the engine running. I like the idea of getting rid of the automatic tensioner, but am totally unsure of making adjustments on these manual ones?

If she's still making that ugly ass clacking noise when you put the new ones in, it's too damn loose. This is why it's better to have it just a wee bit on the loose side and then re-snug it while running. Too tight probably won't make much if any noise right away, and then when it does it'll be a really bad expensive noise IMO.
