Is there a way to prevent this, or do you live with the risk?

Well, it may have lookid bad, but I just finished repairng the damage. I had spare turn signals, and the cowling was easy to repair. I straightened the fairing stay too.

I did report this to the cops yesterday, but they told me there wasn't much they could do about this... being on private property, it wasn't considered a hit and run. However, while I was repairing the bike in my driveway, a cop on a Harley pulled up and gave me the surveillence tapes of the parking lot and checkout area during the proper time. I'm gonna take a look now.

I remember 25 years ago my best friend had a 900z1 kaeasaki. He parked it on the street. His dad backed into it . His dad said "You should not park it there" He said you should not run into it. They where fighting on the kitchen floor over it . They are both gone now .seems pritey silly now.

I like to park there too, but sometimes have the problem of complaining employees. I bet if I look like this guy, a mild suggestion would get them to back off.

Makes you kinda wonder if they would have seen or felt it when they hit a kid on a bicycle. I too park where there are the lines painted. They are called painted medians or painted islands in the trade. Or as Stuke said, park as close to the rear of the parking spot so someone would have to see it as they walked by it.

Personally, if I were to park it up closer to the door and someone challenged me on that, I would not beek off at the turd, cause sure as hell, they are likely to cause your ride some damage soon as you are gone. Be creative. " I have a bit of an emergency going on here. Be right back," The walk away smartly.

This is a resurrection of an older post but worth the review.

My last bike was a victim of a hit & run; only time it was ever on it's side. Sucked that it lost it's virginity that way, but when someone (at a boobie bar) shoved it up & over the stand, broke the 2 bros carbon pipe off, left front mirror, windscreen, but luckily with a little duck tape was able to get it home. It was shoved into another bike, which fell over into bike #3, which fell onto a car. Never did find them.

Now I park right up on the sidewalk (out of the way) or in the striped area of the parking lot at the end caps of the parking area.Sometimes it's even at the far endge of a handi-capped spot. Been known to do that at Sam's. I do take it to some areas to get small items, but home depot/lowes/menards it's is always the car, because the construction workers do not pay attention. If they can't ride, nobody should, right?
No, people have quit caring about other people's property. If I can't have anything nice, why should you? I make my own parking, and if there is another bike somewhere, I'm usually parked by them. Safer in numbers, usually.

Glad to see this thread brought back from the dead......good discussion and revisiting old concerns is always healthy.

I typically go out of my way to park in a place that nobody else could possibly give a darn about. The middle of an empty parking lot, or next to bicycle racks, etc. Can't remember the last time someone gave me grief about where I parked.

If I have to park in a normal parking space, I usually prefer to park deeper in the space. I'm much more concerned about the bike getting knocked over while someone is backing up than while someone is pulling in. Seriously.......spend 5 minutes watching people back out of spaces. I don't know why, but we all seem to turn our brains off.

If someone gives me static for where/how I park, I'll usually move the bike. It never ceases to amaze me how petty people can be, and someone who becomes enraged about something as trivial as a parking spot will have no qualms about tipping your bike over. These are the same people that fake-swerve or speed up when you try to pass them. It's sad - but it's a fact.

There are those that as they walk buy they give them a good shove or kick. Buddy has his XX pushed over - you could see the foot print on both sides of the tank, like he tried to push it over the stand first. Actually they knocked over 3 or 4 bikes that night, all friends who I ride with. Happened years ago in the drunk district.

Regardless, there are people out there that will wreck what you have because it is nicer than what they have, and in their mind, you cannot have anything nice because they can't. Sucks, but is true. That's what I pay insurance for.

I guess you are all in trouble if you get around me........ seriously, I have gone into the video store once when I can out some drunk dude was sitting on my bike making vroom vroom noises....I was polite the one and only time I asked him to remove himself from it... he kept asking me to let him take it for a spin. S I shoved him off.. he went over the left side and when he got up he was looking at two of the Foot patrol officers.... he went to jail for public intoxication....

PArking.. I am fortunate enough that school has a ton of Motorcycle parking but that doesn't stop people from wrecking stuff.... I had a scooter dude run into my bike and crack the fairing...I did find him even though he denied doing it... still waiting on that one

If you care about it, walk a lot father than you normaly would if you did'nt care about it. That being said, I had a Honda S2000 (1st year production) I was going too keep "forever". Parked that thing WAY OUT in no mans land and some sob whent out and scraped it all down the side, had to be on purpose. Parked my Audi convert in my Dads driveway last year..He backed into it, smashed the front good..... I could go on and on about every material thing in this world i have ever cared about. Everything in this world we seem to think is important gets cut or smashed or broken in some way, I think because we need too keep learning nothin in this world is perfect and ment to last. We are just passin throu, this world is not my home.

In the very rare instance I go to any store on the VFR, I park by the front door with the alarm set, in 1st gear and the right side facing the wall. Only grief I ever got was one time a metermaid wannabe mall rentacop left a no no sticky note on the tank...

I didn't want to post this up before as I didn't want to put the cart before the horse. But I have motorcycle parking where I work. While it was parked a while back (i work 1400 - 0200) someone removed the small panel that covers the electrical contacts for my Garmin GPS. Not that does not just fall off. A lever has to be pushed in about 1/4 inch before it releases.

We have cameras everywhere here. Without getting into the technicalities of company policies and our privacy laws, a certain branch of our dpartment viewed the videos. Someone was seen near my bike and they were from my department. I am awaiting approval from our Human Resources Department to view this video. Someone might just get fired.

I wouldn't look at that as "grief" I would look at it as in at least they didn't give you a money parking ticket.....I give the meter readers out here the same respect as the Beat cops....they have badges and guns just like the "big boys" and are generaly meaner than the beat cops........... I have seen them have arguements from people about how they were only parked halfway illegal and why should they be getting a ticket ..... it was only 10 extra minutes........ as much crap as they get I think you got away clean with a warning....

I agree with you but the note was put there by mall security, not a sworn LEO. Also, he mall in question has some unGodly stupid crap going like allowing goth, complete with chains and spikes in clothes and skin, but no one was allowed to wear shades because it was a "security issue".

Ouch, sorry to hear that. I have full coverage insurance on my bike ($181/year) that covers this, among other things, for a $250 deductible.

When I park, I will park in the smaller spots where cars cannot park - typically at the corners where a car just can't fit, but a few bikes fit without issues. If someone complains, just tell them your bike was hit and knocked over when you parked in normal spots, plus you are freeing up an extra spot for other cagers at this busy location. If I do park in a parking spot, I park at the edge of the spot, in the center, so it can be seen prior to someone making a decision to back or drive forward into the said spot.
