Hey all just had a wild brainstorm here, and was wondering if you all thought it was plausible-
The VFR's throttle response is very sluggish when your in 6th gear cruising on the freeway, but when your in 5th at the very same rpm's it responds like every other bike. I have read in other forum's (I think it is a U.K. site) that the sluggish response is due to the EFI being programmed for low emissions, and that particular RPM range is where response it is the worst. If this is the case then:
is the EFI module basing which maps to use off of RPM + speed, or RPM + gear position (i.e. 6th gear)? if it's based off of RPM + gear position then maybe there is a way to bypass/trick the computer to think it is in 5th all the time so the bike will always run better than it normally would...
It' alot of speculation, especially since I can't find a gear position sensor on bikebandit.com.
what say yee fellow viffer pilots?

I am pretty sure the VFR's ECU doesn't know what gear you're in. It probably reads off of engine RPM on the x-axis and engine load on the y-axis to form a fuel curve. The load becomes greater in 6th gear than 5th, and yes you could program it to shoot more fuel at higher loads to make it less sluggish because Honda R&D is concerned of emissions, so they probably don't go for the most possible power. This is basically what a Power Commander does, so that is probably the best way of fixing you're 6th gear sluggishness. Personally, I just downshift and let her wind up if I want to shit and get!

    I changed my front sprocket
In sixth gear I had slugish acceleration
I also found myself at 85 mph crusing along in third gear
I had just sold my sport bike so 6000 rpm did not seem to high
the sprocket change made my spedo way off . i need a spedo healer

A drop down to 5th is a change in the gear ratio is why it's better

I can not leave stuff alone .and It has better acceleration in the lower gears:smile:

I'm with RVFR. Just leave it in 5th. Lots more responsive and you hardly notice the difference in anything else. You will burn a little more gas but so will a Power Commander. Only use 6th when cruising and going real quick.

Well, here's why I am "unsatisfied" with 6th gear performance:
My dad's 82 VF750 Sabre with 100k miles had better performence in 6th than my new 6g 800cc. better MPG too, he gets 50 mpg on average! his bike is heavier, older, and has less power than my bike, but mine runs like it's nuetered. so, untill I get this bike to run the way honda should have done it, in all gears, I will not be satisfied.

As long as you are thinking, add this to the mix. Your transmission is a torque multiplication device.

Available torque at a given RPM is multiplied by the overall ratio of the transmission and the final drive.
