I was unsure if I needed to replace them or not. I did ask in my origonal post so thanks for the input. The rocker arm on the bad lobe looks fine but i have heard from a few different people that when i put a new cam in i wll also need new rocker's. I believe I will go ahead and replace both of them. I might go ahead and replace both cams also... havent decided on that yet.

I am almost positive this has been damaged for quite a while. The bike went 50k miles on the stock oiling system before it got the oiling mod. I changed the oil about 150 miles ago and I didn't notice any metal in it. I never cut open the filter to check but i've still got it so i might get on that if it's rainy tomorrow and I dont have to work.

Nice Air Tractor. My old man cropdusted for 14 yrs, Ag-Cats, Ag Trucks, Cal-Airs. The 600hp Cats were the coolest, lots of exhaust fire on takeoff. Good luck with the bike.

If the other cam is good there is no point in replacing it. Now that you are the owner and the oil feed mod has been done just keep an eye on things at each valve adjust.
It's a good idea to replace the rockers but isn't absolutely a must. For me it would depend on cost.

Yea those AT's are sweet man. My ultimate goal is to land a seat in a plane like that. It will be a few years lol

Ordered my cam today - had to end up going to the Honda dealer because all these websites are full of sh*t. One Honda dealer in Wisconsin had one in stock and according to Honda it was the only OEM genuine in the country. After searching for 3 days I believe it. I'm going to leave the rockers on there and see how it goes. I dont want to invest more money than I have to on a first gen with this kind of mileage!

I've found many an online parts fiche to be unreliable as well. Glad to hear you were able to source the cam. Hope all goes well with the install.

Well well i installed the new cam today. I am pleased to report that the bike is still running! After the new cam install it wont idle very well.. I had to adjust the idle screw a lot. After the new cam and adjusting almost all of the valve clearances i suspect I will need to re sync the carbs and the idle will get better. It seemed to be running just fine eventhough it wouldn't idle well. Had plenty of power but i didn't get it above 5k.

The cam i got had a few differences from the ones in my bike so guess they made a 3rd design for the 1000. Crazy shit.. they only made it for 3 yrs!!

Here are some pics of the cams for ya IC

While I was in the front head replacing the cam I noticed that the cam chain tensioner is pretty much not doing anything and while running the chain is slapping the guide that is above it. I really dont want to take this back apart but it looks like i need to replace the tensioner now.. It never ends!

I think my dream VF(R) would be a second gen motor in a first gen. Maybe I will see what I can do about that...

Thank you for posting the photos. Glad the install went okay.

With a carb synch you should be back in business. This is really a must do after installing a new cam/adjusting the lash.

Scored, pitted, damaged, and is caused from heat and lack of lubrication at the same time.

If you had the cylinder heads off I would line bore the cam blocks and try to get better oiling with any method you choose.
Honda should have tested this much better.
The late 1985 models have line bored cams and oiling through the cam with oil hole in the bottom face of the cam.

Wow what a great example of a first gen litre bike! Any idea which cam design you have?

I've got a solo cowl for mine also and a set of Lockhart fairings im in the process of prepping for paint. I ordered a new decal set a few days ago and hopefully when i'm done it wil look as nice as yours does! The paint on mine is nice but the red decals are fading pretty bad. I also need to order the correct decal set for the solo fairing.

For anyone interested you can order full decal sets from CBdecals.com - Reproduction Decal Kit Solutions for the old Big H Models

Well.. pretty sure i dropped a washer down in the engine case when i was putting in my new chain tensioner. F*CK me! I dug around everywhere with my magnet and drained the oil ect.. cant find it anywhere! I guess i'll have to pull the pan.

For anyone thats re-painted in factory colors: Did you use a honda base for the blue and red?

Didnt take any new pics today but i'll post some old ones for shits n grins

Washers usually end up somewhere harmless, like at the bottom of the oil pan, no real need to remove since they stay there happily without moving.

On the other hand, if it lodges on a camchain, OUCH !!

Ah thats nice to hear. I was just debating on weather I would actually fish it out or not. I've tuned the motor over several times and it is fine so I may just leave it. I would like to check for bits of camshaft in there though.. then again i didn't pick any up on my magnet and i fished all over the place with it.

My wife is on call tomorrow so I should be able to get a lot more done. With my luck no one will be popping out babies or need emergency surgery tomorrow afternoon and i'll be stuck at home fixing bathroom cabinets :chaingun:

She Lives!! For the first few minutes it sounded soo sweet. Then one of the valves started ticking...... i probably didn't torque a lock nut or somehting. Back apart tomorrow!

We started getting chemical in at work so I reluctantly moved it to our golf cart garage which is quite a bit smaller and there are no airplanes :(

The small garage really amplifies the valve tick in this vid so try to ignore it and listen to the sweet sound of a 1000cc v-4 and those supertraps!
