    I'm seeking my first VFR.

There is a 98 with 28K miles on it, looks to be in excellent shape. Owner took good care of her.

Is there anything I should be aware of before purchasing this bike? Known issues with that mileage or upcoming maintenance?

    Thank you

Welcome to the forums and post up some pics when you get a chance.

The regulators are dodgy. Honda came out with a replacement (mine has been replaced) that was supposed to be better. Some have bad experience with the Honda upgrade. So far, mine has held up fine.

Valve clearance check is due at 16k and 32k miles. Your bike is right in the middle of that and I bet you dollars to donuts it wasn't checked, or maybe it was if the owner was diligent.
Coolant replacement is at 24k miles. (It should have been done long before now since it's a 13 year old bike.)
Air filter replacement is at 24k miles.
Brake fluid replacement is at 24k miles.
Clutch fluid replacement is at 24k miles.
Spark plug replacement is at 24k miles.

Check your chain and sprockets for wear and links that bind.

As a general rule, I replace all the fluids and filters with any used bike I purchase. I don't assume it has ever been done. That way I have a baseline for all of my service going forward and I know it's been done.

The motor is pretty much bulletproof. I run the hell out of mine. 28k miles is nothing on these bikes.

What have you guy's averaged in terms of out-the-door shop costs for the valve clearance check?

I sold my VFR (what an idiot) prior to it having to be done but was forewarned that it can be quite involved time-wise...read costly.

Valve checks for the VTEC versions (2002-2009) will run somewhere in the $600 to $700 neighborhood. Non VTEC versions are much easier to work on and should be around $300-$400

The Honda Dealer here in Calgary quoted me an even $1000, assuming everything goes "Reasonably Well".

For $1000, it's definitely worth the time to do it myself. Crikey......I can spend 10 days on the road for that kind of money.

wow, my local honda shop only charged me $127 to do the valve check on my 5th gen, then again when I take my bike in for service I remove the side fairings and leave them at home safe and sound and it cuts down on the cost.

I bought a 98 with 38K miles on it 2 riding seasons ago. It had been crashed at least twice. (I crashed it a 3rd time) It refuses to die!!

I don't know anything about what servicing was done prior to my purchase but I did replace the fluids and put on a new chain, sprockets and rubber. It is a heap next to some of the fine bikes owned by some of the members here. It is pretty much bone stock except for the Corbin seat and a new wiring harness (search VFRness)...I get about 40mpg highway...runs strong. I really like this bike a ton!
