I have only put about 150mi or so on my 2002 w/ABS. But ever since I got it, the air temp gauge always flashes 122. Any ideas?

I should have been more specific. It has about 22k on it, but I have only put 150mi on it since I got it last weekend. Anyway, I have read a couple of other threads talking about the air temp sensor. I tried to download the manual from this site, but I can't get it to work. Can someone post some info on how to locate the sensor, maybe I can try unplugging it and plugging it back in to remedy it. Or maybe the sensor is bad. Any help would be great.

Sorry bud, the only time mine ever read 122 was in Yuma, AZ. Don't think it was flashing though.

She runs fine, I just think having an outside temp gauge would be useful. I won't sweat it too much, but if I can try a few easy things I will sure do that. I may have figured out to download the service manual. If it works I will read through it. Some people on here say you can short the diagnostics plug. If it won't hurt anything I will try that. Maybe its just a code letting me know the air filter needs changed or something. IDFK

And 122 is hot, that would be a toasty ride. especially if you were in leather. Yikes

I've checked the manual and the flashing 122 means the engine coolant is at 122 degrees C. That like 250 degrees F. Supper hot - like the thermostat is stuck. Not a good situation.
I'd suggest taking out the thermostat and checking it before i ride the bike again.

That is a bit on the warm side, even for a gen 6. T-stat is surely your issue as previously stated.

But its the open air temp gauge. And it's in Fahrenheit. The engine temp gauge reads between 165-190 F when I'm riding

Is the air temp reading my coolant temp? I thought that was the other option... And if I'm using the fahrenheit mode? But you all could be right. if the air temp flashing is just the bike's way of telling me that its overheating... as I said before the oil temp is normal, but the air temp is always flashing 122. Please don't leave me hanging on this. Anyone who has an owners manual and can help, please do (the service manual says nothing about it). My bike did not come with an owners manual and you can't download it. Let me know when you can.

Only thing I can find in the manual is to test the Ohms between the terminals on the sensor
Standard is 4.8-5.2 ohms @ 25C/77F I don't think you are confusing the air temp with the engine temp. You would be puking coolant if you rode any amount of time @ 122C

I thought so too. I'm pretty sure my T stat is fine because my Coolant temp (The one that doesn't say "AIR", set to degrees F, fluctuates between 168-212 when warmed up-> lower when I'm riding, higher when sitting at a red light). I think my open air temp sensor is just bad or not plugged in properly. I'm new to this bike, is there a fuse box somewhere or are most of the fuses connected in-line with the related component? If there is a box, where is it?

    Hi again,
If the temp display is set on coolant and the bike can sit and idle with the fan coming on and controling the temp to the low 200s (F) then all should be ok with the cooling system.
The owners manual i have, for a 1998 VFR, says that when the air temp is displayed it will switch to the coolant temp if the coolant temp reaches 122 deg C. It would flash red and have a red underline. Pecular that this is the precise temp that your's flashes at.

    Regards,
    Mark

Wierd. Mixed signals. The fan comes on and turns off. The coolant temp seems to be correstly reading, and the bike runs fine but the air temp is definitely doing what you're saying mark. I wonder how much difference there is in terms of what the display does between 5th gen and 6th...

While changing the oil today I thought I had the temp gauge thing figgered out...but then no.

When I got down to pull some screws from the half cowl my brother saw a plug hanging down, not plugged into anything. He felt up inside the front cowl and realized that it was coming from the open air temp sensor. then we saw the other end that it should have been plugged in to. After some careful teamwork we got it plugged back in... still no worky. EFF WORD. I looked up the part number and from the local dealership it will be $57. From Cheapcycleparts.com it will be $40. Way better price, but a lot for a poor man to know what the temperature is outside. Maybe later. If anyone has a working OAT sensor from a 6th gen, and are willing to part with it, I would love to take you up on it. But I'm not holding my breath because something tells me that these things don't burn out very often and most of you probably don't keep extras on hand.
I hope that the sensor is whats going on. One rainy day I will just take apart the front cowl and remove the sensor to test it, but for now I have too much fun riding to go through all that.
