86 vf500f carb part needed

    Yeah, even at 200-ish pounds I normally have to put my entire weight on the carb rack to get them fully seated. Oh well, 'tis the life of working on a V4 I suppose!

    Problem is....... he's not. What little he may know is far overshadowed but his inaccurate info and downright hateful spirit. I found his "Ineptitude" comment to be very ironic.

    i got new carb boots and my old clamps are stretched out they bottom out before they get tight enough any ideas where i can get new clamps at a reasonable price? carb parts nation has them for $5.29 each thats insane! regular hose clamps are too wide. any ideas???

    It's not the clamps, it's the boots. The newer boots have an outer diameter smaller than the originals. Not sure why. Probably to save money (less material used) or something stupid like that. If you tighten them all the way - don't crank on 'em - it should be sufficient to hold them in place. That's what I did and I've had no problems whatsoever.

    fairly simple way to loosen/soften up the boots are to heat them up somehow, heat gun works great, and soak them in wintergreen oil overnight.
    it doesnt get them as soft as new ones, but makes them much easier to work with, and they dont harden back up after they're dry.

    I'm loving that butthurt form. That made my day, Tink.

    +1 for the boots. Just like my trials and tribulations with my VTR, the single most helpful thing I have done for my VF500F is to get new boots. Maybe it's just me, but from now on any new old bikes in my stable have new carb boots in their future as one of the first things to do.

    I tried a wintergreen oil bath for the old set and it did improve their pliability... but there's really no contesting new rubber. Also, if you avoid the wintergreen oil bath entirely you won't have to worry about your house smelling like wint-o-green lifesavers for the next week. :)

    That's not to say that getting the carb bank is EASY with new boots, it's easiER. There is still more of an art than a science in getting that bank in. Also, as I have done with your mom, I use copious amounts of lube.

    The Squirrel means well; he's a wealth of information if you know how to ask the right questions, and an equal opportunity flamer if you've got a VF500. Considering how every old school bike mechanic in my area expels an expletive when I mention I have an '84, well, I imagine the emotion is the same in the squirrelman.

    I think I, too, have a spare plenum. Just let me know.

    Oh, and as for the sticky throttle cable: if it hasn't been lubed recently, do so. Otherwise, make sure that it's not getting smooshed by the air box when you put that back on. That, too, seems to be more art than science.
