My 800 has clocks marked to 180km/h. The needle goes past the 180 mark off the clock but when it's around the 210/220 speed in any gear there is a limiter that kicks in and kills the motor. How do I get rid of this ?

the revs don't matter, it cuts out when it goes off the clock, 4th gear or 6th.

km'h clocks. The needle goes off the clock in 4th, 5th and 6th but when the speed gets to around 210/220 the ignition cuts out

as I've already said - the bikes cuts out at around 210/220 km'h in 4th, 5th and 6th so the revs don't matter, in 4th, the revs are 10/11k, 5th slightly lower and 6th even lower. This is not a rev limiter issue, it's always when the needle does off the clock in any gear, not rpm's

if the speedo is Buried, then most likely you are hitting the rev limiter.
    red line is what 10,400 - 10,500

ok, i make it more simple for you. AT 8000rpm in 6th gear at 220km/h, my '99 800i cuts out
    at 9000rpm in 5th gear at 220km/h my '99 800i cuts out
at 10500 rpm in 4th gear at 220km/h my '99 800i cuts out
any way to take this SPEED RESTRICTER off ??

Hi There, I have just purchased a 1998 Jap import with a 180kph speedo, so I suspect it is limited to 180kph I am going to Dyno or find the right road to test the theory, I am very innterested to find out if you have found any reliable info on what to do if it is restricted. I have spend about 5 hours looking at a few forums and doing the google thing but not much sense to be had yet

    Hey Kiwi
there is a pink wire that I cut and it stops the speed limiter but only when the bike is on the main stand - as soon as it's under load the fuel injection system goes haywire
there is a mod, i can't get hold of the guy that used to do it here in the late 90's to all the import bikes
it's not as simple as cutting a wire
i met a guy who had the mod done and then fixed what he thought to be dodgy wiring now his speed limiter is back
i will get to the bottom of this

Hi Simon, I am a electrical Automation control system engineer and have finally found some good wiring diagrams for this model. I will do some more research to find out if it is a ECM program mod or we can do a external wiring fix. At first diagnosis there is a transistor feedback on the 98 & 99 model coming from the Speedo to the ECM that may be the trigger but also there is the speed sensor located around the front cog that tells the ecm what speed the final drive is going, so it depends how the ECM code is written as to weather is is looking at the speedo trigger or a calculated speed from the speed sensor the latter prob cant be fixed withouit a ECM replacement or reprogram - if possible Please keep your investigation going and I will let ypu know what I find out also.. Rgds Kiwi VFR ... Ps any you guys riddon our roades her in NZ I know I am biased but it really is motorcycling heaven. Keep the rubber down..... :). Also anyone else find any info links to VFR per 2002 speed derestriction

i am told that there is a mod, just can't find the guy that used to do them
the other vfr guy i know remembers that there was a splice or link and possibly a cut
i looked at another vfr800 with 180 clocks and it looks like the loom has been unwrapped a bit and modified so i must go there again with some tape and try see what's going on
this guy claims the bike does not limit at speed
sounds like you know your stuff

I'm just curious. At 220km, that's about 130 or so mph. I know there is speedometer error as well. How often does the opportunity arise to ride at 220km/h for such a sustained period of time that you need to override the speed limiter? My thought is if you roads are that straight/flat/long where you continuously need to drive in excess of 220km/h, why not get a different bike? R1? CBR? GSXR?

Pliskin - I live in Africa - really long roads, hardly any police. The opportunity to ride in excess of 220km/h is every time I ride my bike. I never said I wish to ride at this speed continuously. The need to exceed 200km/h is when I am overtaking long vehicles or a row of cars or just want to go balls to the wall for a while because maybe I'm a bit of a nutcase. I don't want a different bike, I bought a VFR800 for a reason.
Hope the cures your curiousness, pity you can't help with the limiter problem.

Sorry I can't help with you limiter. I empathize, though, as I would not want to be limited if I continuously hit the limiter. Hope you get it worked out.

Thanks for the feedback. I guess, given the opportunity, if I could continuously ride in triple digit speeds, I probably would. But where I live, that's not an option. Never mind the police, there just isn't enough real estate to do it for any length of time.

    Good luck.

How Do you keep track of your speed with the spedometer pegged? GPS?

FYI, I just got back from a ride Sun night on a long abandoned stretch of highway and my speedo goes close to 200 mph. I hit 135 easily and could have gone more throttlle but backed off because my exit was coming up. I didn't feel like any limiter was holding me back.
