    Hi All,

Apologies if I am asking daft questions, but I am a Honda newbie.

Is there a dedicated power supply for a GPS system? I have ordered the power socket for the bike, so will have the quartet harness, but unsure if this gives a dedicated fused connection for the GPS.

Also, if there is a dedicated socket, is there a power cable to fit or would i have to 'manufacture' one?

    Many thanks in advance

The short answer is no. If you want you can find a powered on ignition wire and use that to trigger a relay. I wired my Garmin 660 direct to the battery with a fuse in-line. The Garmin doesn't stay on the bike (mount has no lock) and only is on the bike when I ride.

Thanks for the reply - I am coming from the world of BMW where dedicated power sockets are in abundance.....well, there is usually one anyway....

Looks like I will be getting intimate with the VFR on Tuesday.....

LOL - given some of the accessory installs I have done, I would be embarassed to put photos up! I tend to get it working and hide cables as best as I can......I come from a farming background and have a "that'll do" attitude to alot of things.

Need to get the panels off and see where I can install stuff, and also need to get a mount for my Zumo before I worry too much about it.

Anyway, my wife tells me my fender extender and venture shield kit have arrived, just waiting on the radiator protector now, so that should keep me busy when I get the bike on Tuesday!

I made a power supply for my Fortrex GPS for my car. I used a LM317 based circuit, the cost was 3 dollars. My Fortrex runs on 2AA cells only, so I set my power supply at 2.8volts.

I run accessories off the tail light. It's easy, and it's keyed. Have a near empty fuel tank so you can prop it up enough to do a clear wire run.

If you plan on adding more little items down the line, put a power distribution block/plate under your tail so you don't have to keep splice into your tail light wiring.

    Cheers SLOav8r!

I hadnt thought of that - again, coming from the world of BMW and CAN-bus electrics where you have to be super-careful where and what you plug / splice into.

I have seen a item called a Fuzeblock which has a built in relay for switchable power.....may investigate this more.....

I made a custom loom for my tank bag, look up "hardwire kit" on eBay and the name of your device. Mine has an XM radio, Valentine 1 radar detector, Garmin GPS and iphone charger. Then get a bare powerlet kit if you are into that Plugs Sockets Wire & More - Powerlet Products

alternatively (this is what I did) go with SAE connectors Battery Charging - Powerlet Products. you can then plug into your battery tender harness and run off the battery (remember to disconnect when stopped). When I stop i remove my tank bag as I dont need some filthy fook stealing my stuff.

you could always just wire in a cigarette adapter (powerlet site) and keep it simple

SAE - pros - works with battery tender lead, very straightforward install
Powerlet - pros - works with many heated jackets and any accessory made for a BMW
    Cig Adapter - easy install

Side note, most recent smartphones have both GPS/Navigation as well as storage for songs/MP3 Player. When I tour, I have my phone in the clear tank back map pocket charging off the bike charging system. As I ride, I listen to my music and when the music fads out the GPS lady will instruct me to my next turn then the music will kick back on. Very convenient when the sun is so bright you will have a hard time seeing the screen.

I’ve sorted my power requirements by fitting a small fuse/distribution box under the seat. For me it's key to be able to easily add/change items and to get to fuses easily. This powers my intercom system (Starcom digital), tom-tom sat nav, heated jacket, blue tooth dongle, charges my phone and powers the iPod. The set-up works really well. The nice thing with this particular box is the outputs can be either always on or switched, and easily changed as required. Over all works really well.

As a matter of interest, how did you mount the Fuzeblock?

Heavy duty velcro. No drill or screwing and can be easily removed. Simple and works really well.

Be careful of those bare red wires going into your box. Looks like it has the potential to rub on the bike. One is right next to the bare ground wire.
