Looking to upgrade my 85 Vf500F. I found a 1998 VFR800FI, went and saw it today. It rides so smooth. The paint, fairings, seat, etc are all in great condition. Tires still have some tread, brakes are good, battery is a year old. Oil hasnt been changed in 1400 miles. No known problems, rides great. The guy is looking for $2,700...good price?? Good generation?? The only thing that annoys me is the loud gear whine, but i know its common on all of them. Any advice for this bike, price and everything? The only thing different from the picture is that it now has a Delkovic Chrome pipe, instead of the holeshot one.

The gear whine annoys you? That is part of the reason we buy 5th Gen and earlier VFRs. Sounds like a decnt deal to me.

it's not that it's annoying as much as it's hard to get used to since my 85 whine isn't quite as loud. Excuse my ignorance but the whine is not a sign of anything bad..? Also, why exactly is there gear whine?

The gear whine spooked me at first til someone here told me it's normal. Now I like it. Thatsva good deal and you'd be hard pressed to find one much cheaper unless it's cracked up. 5th gen is getting hard to find. You are looking at a bike with cheap insurance rates, goes plenty fast but rides smooth through corners, and doesn't kill your back when riding 250 mile days.

Reg- yea I'm thinking ts a real good deal and from a few months of looking it's one of the inky and nicest 5th gens I have found. From what I undestand it's a great generation of VFRs. I drove it yesterday and loved it man.

Crusty- it does have some whine and im sure it's a problem...lol

gear whine is simple. you have gear drive cams in some of them, which make gear noise, that in my eyes sounds BEAUTIFUL. m friend's RC51 does the same thing. its a gorgeous sound.

Yes, it sounds like a good deal. Be sure to ask for the rear seat cowl. It is not in your picture and you definitely want it. Also, I'd see if they have the stock exhaust. Why not take it if they've got it? Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Sounds pretty good, had an '00, you'll love it. Funny you mention the noise, that's one of the things I miss about my 5th gen (and my '86 VFR750). Good luck, if it works out you won't regret it.
If you wish a pipe, PM me, I have a stocker and a shop manual for it.

Well I have three in a box, one is brand new the two others are like almost new. Good news is that they are all red. Do you ever ride in the Poconos? We have a small group that meets there but lately they have all been sleeping in and not riding!!

So I did, put a deposit down!! Picking it up late next week, and I'm so stoked to join the 5th gen club!!!!
Dino- I haven't ever gone to the Poconos but I'd imagine it'd be nice. How often you all get together? How much for the not brand new cowls??
