Hello all. Just got some soft bags for touring. I went with the Nelson Rigg 850 saddlebags and 150 tail bag. I also went with the heat shields for the tail bag. I ordered through www.cycleluggage.com and got an OK deal but since I was first looking I might have been able to get a better deal elsewhere. So far the bags fit very snug. I do want to fab a better way to attach the bags in the rear (right now their linked to each other behind the license plate, very close to the exhaust...). I've rode around a little bit (about 20-30 miles) and bags have been fine even under hard acceleration. The look isn't the best there is out there but they hold a lot and for an extra large rider like myself that's needed. Overall the storage is 108.98 L. I will let people know how they are on longer rides as soon as the downpour slows down.

Also I decided to mount a cigarette adapter in the bike as part of my tire repair kit. (I would post how I did it but I found after I blew the first fuse I was not the best one to educate). anyway it looks a little like this:

Storage seems quite ample but I see myself kicking that top bag getting on and off

Figured I would talk a little bit more on the bags in case anyone is interested. I have ridden with the bags for about 6000 miles now. I did have to learn a new way to mount the bike since the tail bag is high and I'm not that flexible. So far they have held great. adjusted the mounts once or twice and they have held. I did add u bolts to my fender and attached the bags to those rather than to each other. I have rode with them as faster then I should have loaded down and they don't move or really change how the bike handles. I've gone on several trips with them including a week long trip around Oregon. I have not had any wear on the bike like others complained but we'll see as the years and miles go by. I have ridden in several downpours and found that anything touching the top or sides of the bag will get damp but normally not soaked even after hours of riding. I've therefore never bothered to put on the rain covers. I did end up buying the matching tank bag. Though the bags are huge I would recommend against the tank bag (though it is now discontinued so shouldn't bee an issue). The tank bag does not stay put and slides side to side no matter how much I tighten the leads.

only wear on the bags themselves is the edge of the heatshieds contacted my muffler and started to melt. This is only the very outside edge of the shields and not the bags themselves. Heat barely makes it in the bags and I've bought ice cream and rode home for 25 miles and it was still mostly frozen.

Wish I had more to offer but figured there were a lot of threads from when people first buy equipment and not enough after thoughts about he equipment.

Thanks for the great info and pics. I've been looking at buying a set of soft bags for my '02 and I'm leaning towards Nelson Rigg right now, specifically the spirit 50 touring bags.

What size heat pad did you go with for your bags? I'm thinking the medium should be fine for these since they're a little smaller than the 850's.

I used the large heat shield, but I do think these are one of the largest Nelson Riggs available. I'll also say that I put 3000 miles on the bike in a month with these bags on recently and am now showing some scuffing on the plastic. Also you do need to use the rain covers if you will be in the rain for long. It rained on me for about 5 hours during a 700 mile trip and I hadn't bothered with the covers, my gear was soaked through and through.
