Nice work! Thank you for posting the progress photos.

I am looking forward to seeing the finish paint go on.

On a side note, how did your decal research work out?

The decal search is going well. I found sa guy from Australia that sells on Ebay, and he has the correct decals for both the VF1000R, and the VF500F. Unless anybody has previous bad experience from that seller, I think I'm going to go that route.

    Good deal.

If I could ask, could you please post a link to the eBay auctions? Thx!

    Thanks for the post.

I wonder if he can make the earlier tri-color wing? I haven't found a source for these yet...

cbdecals.com have excellent quality reproductions. I used a set on my VF1000R.

    Thanks for the post.

If I could ask, did you use a tri-color wing?

Actually, I did use the wings from another company. It was from a CBR set, but i cannot recall the name of that company. They were based in Malta of all places. I never cared for the bright, fluffy Honda wings! Just a personal taste issue! :) I'm repainting the bike later this year anyway, so i get to start all over again. It didn't fall over or anything, but I just didn't think it was 'perfect' enough last time around.

    Long Overdue Update

Well, after a long school year, I have finally gotten some time to start working on the 1000R again. Since my last post I have:

-Found a rear seat cover out in the vast conglomeration of sportbike plastics, and it was in great shape, but missing the pad.

-Replaced the chain and sprockets. I believe the stock gearing is 44/17. At work, I was only able to find a 42/16 set, which chainges the gearing ratio from 2.588 to 2.625. I also added a new Gold Series O-ring chain.

-Found a front brake lever on a CBR1000F Hurricane which got me the adjustment mechanism I needed and then found new levers for the front brake and clutch, but I forgot to take pictures of them.

-Bled the front brakes, and are now functioning perfectly.

-Turned my attention to the rear brakes. I was missing the reservoir, so I found one off a VF700F and installed it on my rebuilt master cylinder. I started by back-bleeding from the caliper to the master cylinder, but the fluid would never come up into the reservoir. After hours and hours of atempting to bleed the system, it would never bleed. It would never take any fluid from the reservoir, so it would just pump it self dry. I took it back off, and went out to the yard to see what I could find. Right away, I found an 87 VFR700 that looked like it had a very similar master cylinder. I checked it on the bike it was on, and it was still functioning on that bike, so I took it off. It is identical to the VF1000R, except that it is painted black, where my stock one was raw aluminum. The piston diameter is the same, and the brakes bled instantly with this one on.

-I took both radiators off, flushed them out (forwards and backwards), cleaned everything, and fixed one of the fan shouds that was bent and preventing the fan from turning. Once again, I forgot to get pictures, but everything cleaned up very nice.

-Did a general test fit to make sure I am not missing anything. This is where I discovered that the tail I found last summer is from an 85, and does not have the tail light mount that I need(thanks to VFRworld members). Since my '86 tail is in terrible shape (every mounting location is broken, and it is sun-warped on the right side. I am searching for the 85 taillight mount so I can use the 85 tail.

-I also found a reproduction sticker kit on Ebay. I have that now, so I just need to finish the bodywork on the tail, and start painting everything.

    On with the pics:

^These were once teeth on the rear sprocket.

    ^New rear sprocket (42t)

^It has since been cleaned out in the drive sprocket area.

^Whoever originally had the tail that I found, must have thought that there were pretty frickin' awesome.

^The front fender got painted bacause I had to paint the fork legs for my 500F.

Mechanically, the only things the bike needs to be a good rider are fork seals, and new tires. Those are on the horizon very shortly. The updates should hopefully be coming more frequently now that I can work in the bike.

Looks like it's coming together nicely! I have a question about you ebay decals because I'll be looking to re-spray my '85 VFKR this winter. I saw some VFKR decals on ebay but they don't seem to be colored, just black and white and price is very cheap. I asked the seller if they were colored but never got an answer from him so be careful. The decals I've been referred to run about $175. Not cheap. If you have a link for the decals you got I'd appreciate it. I want my bike to look right but I'm all for a good deal.
