Whatever. Havcar rode his faster than any one else I've seen on any liter bike in Colorado. He had an aftermarket exhaust, PCIII with custom map, and tuned suspension for his weight and aggressive riding style.

Oh yea, he was short and stocky too.

The bike can perform if you know how to ride it and dial it in to match the rider.

ILuvmountains, the guy ia Freddie Spencer... Or at least one of the guys... He won many a race on his older vfnotsurewhat. He had a track school and rented bikes to racers and he rented out.... You guessed it.... VFR800s... And he rode the piss out of them on the track.

No bike out there is perfect for any rider outta the box. Everybody changes things. For most of my VFR life I have only had a PCIII and Sargent seat. Finally this year I decided I guess I love the bike so much that Im keeping it beyond the 3 year limit I seem to have with other bikes and I put Staintune exhaust on her that I got cheap on eBay.... That sound..... Ahhhhhhh. I also added some powerlet outlets to more easily power my radar detector and charge my phone while riding. I DID drop 20.00 at the track once to have the guy dial in my still stock suspension. Point is... This bike is so damn near perfect stock, with very few mods you can make it perfect for all types of riding.

I think you need to ask yourself what you want. If you wanna go fast in a straight line all day, get a liter bike. Here's what i wanted when I went looking.... I told dealer afer dealer that I wanted a true sport touring bike with the emphasis on SPORT. After getting the ST1300 and VStrom as answers and telling them no way... I said emphasis on SPORT!! I got blank stares. Then one very intelligent young man said "You might like this Interceptor". I had never heard of an Interceptor but I liked the way it looked. I went home and researched and got chills... Yes! This was the bike I wanted!! I have never looked back.

So.... if you only want to ride short distances, love going fast straight and fighting your bike in the twisties, let her go to someone who can truly appreciate her worth. However, if you want a bike that can handle any kind of riding you throw at her, a bike that is intuitive and works with you not against you and, as someone said, probably the safest bike you can get for what it does.... Give her another chance. But put her through her paces, dont baby her.... If you have any questions at all or want to chat about her Im all ears and will help you out. I have had 3 friends buy VFRs... 2 after test riding mine.... You just need to fully understand the fine piece of machinery that she is....

This is my second VFR. I know what it is and agree 100% with all you say. I remain dissapointed this bike is heavier and less powerful than my 87. I know all about Freddy and his school. My idol was and is Joey Dunlop. My dream machine is the 88 works 750 VFR and or an RC 30, though of course the RC 30 has nothing to do with sport touring. In July of 87 I brought home my 87 VFR F2H and had 13 happy years on her until I hit a dog in October of 2000. I have nearly all the parts to rebuild her now. With my Ohlins shock and Progressive sprung front end my main goal in life was to ruin the day for an unsuspecting Ducatist.

I rode this bike home and was immediately dissapointed by the delivery from the V-Tec engine. Not doing my homework I had no idea what the curb weight of this bike had grown to. I had no idea about V-Tec. I just knew it was a VFR, 21 years newer than my old one, it just had to be better! IF I could sell this tomorrow there is no new bike I would want. I am devoted to the V-4. Perhaps someday a 93 and I will collide, until then I believe it's time to start rehabbing the 87. Something I have done before over the years. IF I can't sell this bike I have considered trying to re crate it and hope in another 20 or 30 years it would be a true collectors item. Trust me if I could find a newish 87 or 93 I would be on it. In fact I have came close a few times to buying another 87, but what kept me from doing so was my sentimental attachment to my 87. 1992 I had a brand new ZX-11 and as odd as it sounds felt I was cheating on " my girl". I know what a fine versital bike this is but I appreciate hearing it again.

Now closer to 50 than 40 I have no competetive desires ( I think), in fact I almost exclusively rode solo back in the day anyway. Though there were a couple friends I would ride with side by side at the ton up, stopping and switching bikes for a while. Currently I live in Kentucky and the roads are not to my liking. The drivers stink and there is no such thing as a shoulder or a berm in the entire state. I'll get back on a VFR soon, just probably not this one.

THANKS TO ALL FOR YOUR GOOD ADVICE.

I don't understand how you can buy a bike and don't like the color, the weight or the power. Any chart will show that the bike only has about 57 ft.lbs of torque and is 500 lbs. What were you thinking?

Well there is no perfect bike for everyone. I can't gripe if you don't love the bike that I love, I would be an asshole if I tried to tell you what you like. All I can say is you may want to try giving her another chance, and if you are still disappointed, get her along to someone else who will love her. She doesn't deserve to sit around. Best of luck in whatever you do and as long as you are on two wheels, shiny side up, you are doing alright.

Maybe the bikes gender is a male. What does the bike have to be female? My bike has balls.

Is it ok to do guy on guy action if I think my bike is a male??

I don't know why but my bikes are always girls, yet I agree, they have balls. I guess I'm not as straight as I thought!
And it is totally OK...check out the video from SNL "its not gay if its a three way"

I used to say " my bike is too reliable to be a woman..." Yet traditionally vessel's of speed are always reffered to as she or her.

You let your wife control your wallet? Take a tip from big business and set up a slush fund for things like bike parts, guns, ammo, liquor, rubber tires, you know essential commodities...

It's a long story that involves danger and intrigue. I'll type it out one of these days.

I just bought a new '09VFR and couldn't be more pleased! At 49 I'm looking for comfort 'n speed and the VFR gives both in my world. Perhaps give your '08 a second chance, take it on a long ride then see how your body feels, eh.

Ok, I couldn't even read through all this. I just sold an R1 AND a dirt bike. The 2006 R1 is infinitely faster, thinner, lighter, smoother, and better handling. Not dissing the VFR, but let's not get crazy here...

I am not even sure its smoother than a 600. And the VFR is not a 250 lbs dirtbike, or Supermoto in my case.

Glad you are thrilled with your bike though, that is all that matters!

It's been a long time since I've been on this board and I must say, this thread is full of operator error.

My '03 has been gone for nearly two years and it is still the best all around bike I have owned. Every bike has quirks and things that aren't perfect and must be changed but to give up after 60 miles or whatever? Man I thought I had a quick trigger.

Tell ya' what, I'll trade ya' my Ducati 749 which is the complete opposite of your VFR. All the power is below 7,000 RPM and not a thing above, haha!

    Ride on...

As long as we're talking Ducs - My 06 pearl white VFR is my latest acquisition. 2 years ago I bought a black Streetfighter S and I've had a green 03 ZRX since 04. They're all street bikes, but all different. I think my VFR is the best lookin, the SF is a beast, a one dimensional hooligan bike that is just about impossible to ride anywhere close to the speed limit. 400 lbs wet with 150 hp, but comfy ergos. The ZRX is my favorite as it is loaded with torque from 3grand to redline, handles well, is bullet proof and does everything well. I can also ride it close to the speed limit. I got the VFR for sport touring - it's nice to have weather protection and hard bags. I really am enjoying the VFR. Let's see, I"ve got an inline 4, a V-4 and a twin, so I guess my next bike will be a Triumph tripple. Life is good

I have an 03 R1, a 2k VFR, an 05 VFR and an 03 Yamaha 600R. I like the R1 and do not find it uncomfortable, but do feel like I am connected to the bike. The Yamaha 600R is a nice baby VFR with the Yamaha cornering pedigree. I did mods on both the R1 and 600R, and played with the suspension settings for performance. Both Yamahas love to lay down in corners and track so goood - love draggin a knee on both bikes. The R1 is like a scapel on the road with so much power and is lightening quick - very stable at high speeds and you get to triple digits before you realize it. The Yamaha 600R gets a little shakey around 130mph. I bought the 05 VFR used and it was setup nice by the pevious owner with a Power Commander. I have to ride the shit out of it to keep up with other riders. I redline the 05 VFR in every gear and the bike will move and it handles really great. My 2k VFR is still my favorite bike to ride. It is the best compromise between riding a supersport bike and a sport tourer type of bike. The 5th Gen VFR IMHO is the best VFR for all purpose riding and occasional trackdays (the white 93 VFR is the prettiest in my opinon). I think it is all about your riding style and getting the bike setup the way you like to ride. It also helps being at least 6 ft tall and around 200lbs. The R1 is the most fun to ride, and I love leaning hard in turns on it. The Yamaha R1 tracks sooo nice in corners and twisties. The 2K VFR is the most versitle and the 05 VFR with the Power Commander and funky VTEC is a nice 2 up ride. The 6th Gen VFR suffers from having a VTEC engine and is a porker, but can be setup for a little fun, you are gonna have to ride it hard to get any kind of real sport type performance out of it - best used for some lazy type cruising or two up riding/touring. For a shorter person the Yamaha 600R is a nice performing (baby VFR), and comfortable bike that corners wonderfully and can dust the VTEC VFR - is a fun ride and ok for two up riding. Just my 2 cents.
