Silver Surfer and I were to meet up today for that but the cooling issue needs to be dealt with before I wander that far from home but we will make it happen.

No issues making it leave the ground or keeping it from doing so. I have a hard time believing that it is easy to keep the tire down after riding a few bikes with 170ish HP and doing 3rd gear power wheelies. The 6th gen is a heavy whore in comparison to them but it is already easy enough to bring it up without the SC...

+1 on the video. We might have to take up a collection for a handful of GoPro's for Toe for our viewing pleasure.

I read somewhere that the 6th gen test mule had been fitted with a 5th gen oil cooler. I can't find a link.

John, are you running with or without the fairings? I found out during testing that the 6th-gen runs much cooler with the bodywork mounted in place (which is the opposite of the 5th-gen, btw). Even in traffic during July/August, I never saw the temps climb higher than 215ºF.

If high coolant temp becomes an issue, you can always try the VTR fan swap and 195ºF fan switch -- these mods did wonders for my '98, which would routinely hit 237ºF. Before the swap, once the coolant temp would hit 200ºF it would then steadily climb into the 230-237 range and would only cool if I would shut the bike off. After the swap the highest I've seen is 215-220 in stop and go, and the bike actually cools down once moving.

The Laminova cooler is only used on the 5th-gen because there is no space for a traditional oil-to-air cooler. A larger cooler is a good idea, but you definitely do not want it so large that it cools the oil too much (I found this out when I initially finished my bike). I run 20W-50 and have not had any issues with the aforementioned high coolant temps.

These VFRs run hot, but as long as you use good gas, there's no problem taking it to redline when the temps are over 200ºF (you just have to give the cylinders time to cool down in-between bursts).

It's a custom pipe I designed. It uses the bend from the stock exhaust and the reverse cone megaphone hand-built by ARC Fabrications (no longer in business).

At 290, I suggest some suspension modifications or a futon on the deck.

Running the bike completely assembled, going to do some work on it tonight to seal up around the radiators to keep as much air flowing through them and have some other parts in the mail that I will try this weekend. What is this VTR fan mod you speak of? I have heard mention of it before but do not know the particulars. And do you have the part number for said fan switch, pretty please? Sorry for being such a slacker on posting but have had to catch up on some things I have let go do to this project and goofing off. :juggle:

so Toe, since we're on the subject of engine cooling, when it comes to Water Wetter in your bike (and other vehicles), how exactly do you mix it (ie the single bottle mixed in with the 50/50 antifreeze mix, or just a straight 50/50 WW/water mix)?

The VTR fan has blades with reverse pitch of the VFR's - thus the air is sent from the forks area out the side by the fan - aiding the flow while moving rather than fighting it. Seems to be lots of opinions about its effectiveness. While moving, a + as it the fan aids the flow, but while stopped, it's drawing air heated by the exhaust and sending that through the rad out the left side, the pre-heated air reducing the temperature differential and thus effectiveness. DK the part #, but there are lots on ebay. A quick search on Service Honda or similar will turn up the part #. I also have been looking for an additional cooling solution, including adding some additional capacity (like a mini bike radiator) but keep getting stumped - just doesn't seem to be any additional room for anything. I have also looked to see if an RC51 left rad might fit - it has 3 additional rows than the gen 6 rad does but it doesn't appear that it will fit under the plastic. There are also ducts available for RC51's that direct air to the rads, but there doesn't seem like much room for that on the VFR. Here's a photo of one.

Would be cool to wire in a polarity switch that would change the direction of the fan blades in which direction you want them to spin.

That would be a help for sure. Not sure of the design of the OEM fan motor - however if you take a CPU fan from a computer and hook it up correctly it will run, but if the +/- are reversed, it does not run. Maybe someone on here knows if that could be done and how rather than swapping blades. My issue with the gen 6 is that IMO it lacks reserve cooling capacity. I've seen my temp climb to 220 while I was running hard up a long hill at 70mph. That wasn't an airflow issue. And yet once I crested the hill and was asking less of the motor the temp came back to a more normal range. Seems like Honda gave it just enough cooling but no more. With the S/C kit it's even worse, not only because of the extra fuel going through the engine but also that the gen 5 rad used on the R. side has 2 fewer rows than the gen 6 rad did - I think that may be adding to the high temp issue with the kit.

If your temps are in the 220's while on the highway, it's because your fan is on. Pull over and let it turn off then get back on the highway. The fan fights the wind current entering the bike and the fan fights it and keeps the bike from cooling down.

I still say go with a bigger oil cooler.
