I don't think they usually vibrate off. It's just that they can never figure out what they're for. I love how the front side of their mirrors is usually shinier than the back...

Now Ducatis, however... "And now my friend, the first-a rule of Italian driving…” (rips off the mirror and tosses it, with much Italian flair) “…what’s-a behind me is of no importance. ”

GWWALkS that is the one! Take that sucker out and put some locktite on it fast. The other one is just a screw on nut and I did that one also even though it did not give me any trouble.

Oh ya. And "Ignorant Bystander" I did notice you. I was just too busy eating my Big Mac, talking to my stock broker, and reading the book "10 Steps to Motorcycle Safety" to care.

Bet you feel pretty smart then.

Yes, I noticed you noticing me.

Wanna know what other bolts I took off your bike?

No thanks. I like surprises. I'll just make sure I ride back the same way I come all the time to pick up the pieces that fall off. Everything for these darn bikes is expensive!!

Also went and checked mine .... tight as a fish's ass!!

Maybe this has something to do with the "which way does water spiral down the plug-hole"
phenomenon, and down here (southern hemisphere) ours get tighter??

ha! funny a thread about this popped up, cause it just got me, too.

just moved the bike across country 4 months ago. it broke free of its straps but somehow managed to rock on its kickstand the whole way across country (it was in one of those PODS, fyi). it bent the kickstand, so i took it off and bent it back. the bolt was in at that point. couple weeks ago, though, it leaned back over on me. i thought the kickstand had bent back, but when i went to install a new one, lo and behold i see that damn bolt had fallen out and the whole bracket had rotated around the stud.

$3.00 in hardware later, i'm good to go.

So I am out with my VFR buddies and I put my side stand down to fill up with gas. WTF?! You know the story... but I didn't. My buddies said, "havent you read the thread?" To which I replied, "What thread?"

Tell your friends! Some of us just do not have the time to surf so share these little tit-bits. This thread needs a sticky!

checked mine yesterday after reading this thread. I wasn't loose, but I put some locktite on it and made sure it was tight. Thanks for the thread, I bet it saved a lot of us from having to go through the pain of dropping the bike in the future.

Just happened to me yesterday, kicked out side stand, leaned over and it went a little far. Didn't drop it. I wish I would have read this thread earlier.

This very thing happened to me. I was out for a 200 mile ride and noticed at a stop that the bike sort of leaned a bit far. I took it easy and at each stop I was putting the sidestand down, getting off the bike gingerly, then putting it up on the centerstand. When I got home, sure enough, bolt gone. A $1.42 Lowe's bolt later. back in business.

I wish I saw this earlier...

So first of all hello! I've been a lurker on this forum for the past month after picking up a (formally) pristine 2003 VFR800A with matching Honda red luggage.

On my way back from a 200 trip to visit family this weekend I decided to stop for some fast food. Now being a short statured guy at 5'6 I have to be careful on my bike and require the kickstand to swing my leg over safely with the luggage on. I put the kick stand down and just as my leg was over the seat I noticed the bike continue to lean but I managed to catch it half way down whilst cussing and grunting it back up. After determining I am was somehow missing the infamous bolt I decided to continue down the road.

Now for the unfortunate part. I passed a Home Depot and thought it wise to stop and try to find a metric bolt to replace the missing one. I managed yet again to not drop the bike when getting off of it and placed a driver from my tool kit into the hole to steady the bike on the side stand.

I then attempted, while winded in a soft asphalt parking lot, to put the bike on the center stand. Just as I reached the apex of the stand for it to lock an extremely strong gust of wind blew from behind and over we went right onto the right side of my previously flawless bike.

Fortunately I am insured but the adjuster has not seen it yet. I am hoping for the best.

    The before and after :(

Also I'd like to thank all the various helpful people who have posted reviews and installation/maintenance information here. I have added a Sarget seat and Helibars due to feedback here without installation issue and to my increased enjoyment riding.

Went on a trip last week to OC, MD and noticed my bike leaning further and further over on stops. Did not see anything when I got there, too dark so I put it on the centerstand when it was leaning over really far ( it did not fall thankfully ). Noticed that the bolt was missing. So now I need to replace it. Anyone know the exact size? I saw 8mm and also 10x26. If I go to Lowe's what should I be looking for?

    I think I fixed it...

I pulled the back bolt out on mine and added loctite, but it looks like it's different than what everyone else is fixing. Mine has an allen head... Am I looking at the wrong bolt, or did the PO already replace it?

that is the correct bolt! usually has chain lube all over it. i took it out, cleaned the whole area w/degreaser, applied thread locker and tightened it down. thanks for the pic.
