    86 VFR700.

Where on the gauge does the needle usually sit? Mine never goes more than a 1/4 in from the bottom line in the "normal" area. That run of the mill or is my gauge suspect?

Depends on a lot of factors lad. My '86 VFR750 runs about 1/3 up from the bottom when thoroughly warmed up, slightly higher when climbing a grade in hot weather, and as high as mid-gauge when sitting in traffic in hot weather.

If you are in a cool climate and not working the bike very hard, it could very well be normal.

My '86 VF1000R runs down there too (and it's normal).

I bet your gauge is normal. Mine runs pretty low depending on the ambient temp.

agreed with everybody else.... in SoCal my temp never went about 1/4....and if it was hot out and I was idling for some stupid reason it would heat up and the fan kicked in and all was good.... but moving around.. it was pretty low...

Temp only normally climbs to top half when you're in stop-and-go traffic on a warm day. If i'm riding on a cold day here in NY, i'll cover the oil cooler with tape.
