Fixing / repairing fairings.

    I have finally taken her apart and started sanding her down to give her a fresh paint job and bring her back to life. I have some cracks and some small missing pieces and was wondering what is best for repairing cracks on 20 year old plastics? I have read about plastic welding and don't know if it would work good with plastics that old. What is the best plastic repair stuff out there besides plastic welding?

    hi there i have just done the same thing to 93 VFR RC36, but i worked for a panel beating company for a year & 1/2 and the best thing i have come across is a plastic repair kit called Q-bond, it works really well. i have made tabs on the right hand side of my headlight and the faring because there where no tabs holding the faring or headlight on the right side of the bike. i dont know if you guys get Q-Bond in the US but its worth a try.
    the thing is you need to V the crack, on the INSIDE first the use some of the Q-Bond glue, glue the crack then, pour the powder over the glue, then pour more glue over the powder untill it becomes rock hard. then you need to the same thing on the frount side of the crack, flat it nicely and then fill up the little holes with bodyfiller. hope this helps.

    I have good luck with Loctite Plastic Epoxy, it makes a good bond with ABS. To prepare the surface for bonding, I use ABS cleaner/solvent of the type used for prepping plastic drain pipe, available at Lowe's and others. I grind off the finish and vee the crack both sides, apply the cleaner/solvent, the surface will become sticky, apply the epoxy right away, both sides. When the epoxy is cured, I then apply an ABS patch on the inside over the repaired crack using the same techinque. On the outside,when the epoxy is cured, dish it slightly with a grinder and it is ready for filler and sanding. This also works well for repairing broken off mounting tabs.

    and they come in all kinds of colors ...so you should be able to match up.... my kid would kill me in my sleep if I melted down her legos....LOL might have to sneak one just to see how well it actually works....

    I've used a plastic welding repair kit from Hamilton Performance Products called Plastex™ Plastic Repair Kit that worked well at welding cracks and filling in abraded parts on my bike.     in my signature is a link to a thread where I restored a 1990 using plastic welding. I am not a fan of the chemical fixes and think that a properly executed plastic weld is the most durable long term solution.

    This might be a little off subject, but I would think this is an excellent time to throw
    away the cheap Honda fairing fasteners, that break if you look at them sideways,
    and replace them with high quality Dzus Fasteners.

    I had these on my RC30 and race bike and loved them.
    Too bad the bean counters at Honda can't see the value of good fasteners.
    You can take your fairings off and on in a fraction of the time . . . without tools,
    when you have Dzus Fasteners!

    You know its all about cheaping out now! You go to attach some battery cables and you wish you had an extra half an inch, maybe less. Just a cunts-hair more! And you curse them bean counters, but then I try to think of it from their point of view and say, "well FUCK, we dont care about the guy that has to attach them cables, he dont even come into dah formula." We can save X amount on each unit and thats gona translate into PROFITS. All them plastic push pin garbage fasteners suck imho. Now its truly mass produced stuff...:smile: My 21 year old bike about comes apart by itself with them nice 1/4 turn fasteners...Bet Curvy Gurl looks good when she bends ova :tongue:

    When I fixed my Honda C90 Mudguard, I used an old Soldering Iron and some cable ties.
