Was doing P90x, but was made to lay off by the docs after transplant. Just got the go ahead to start working out again, going to try Insanity. But may end up with the old tried and true P90x.

Work also helps, being a service tech for DirecTV is a good physical job

    Hey VFR peeps!

Former fit-turned-fatass-turned-fit person here. Glad to sees threads like this.

Here is my story... got out of the Marines in 2003 and met my Wife shortly afterwards. When we met, I was 175 lbs and in damn fine shape. 15 pullups, 100 situps, 5k run time in the 20-21 minute range. Not bad for almost 30. Well, I started going to college and got married. Over the span of a few years, I climbed the Mountain Dew Range and was crowned the Burger King at a whopping 250 pounds when I graduated in 2008.

The day after I graduated, I decided that I had run out of excuses. So I started doing the only thing that I really wanted to do. I walked 4 miles a day at lunch. That was the ONLY exercise that I did for the first year or so. In that time, I lost 25 pounds. As for food intake. I stopped eating out and cut the sodas down and only drank one every few days or so. It took about 3 years to lose the first 50 pounds. But, it went on slow, so figured it needs to come off slow.

Now we come to this morning. My Wife and I are training for the Knoxville Marathon that is in April. This morning we met for our weekly training run. It was 14 miles today. I ALMOST made it but the last 1/3 of a mile had to be cut off as I was about to literally shit myself. They last 100 yards was the fastest for me, since I was streaking across the parking lot headed for the grocery store, haha.

Getting fat sucks. I saw my waistline go from a loose 34 to a 42 and was wearing XXL shirts. My knees hurt, my back hurt, and my dick was hidden. At 5'9", 250 pounds looks awful. Don't try and convince yourself that you are not fat. You are. And your body hates you for it too. The doctors wanted to put me on high blood pressure medicine when I was at 150/90 constantly. I told them to get bent and I will take care of it myself. In two weeks I turn 35 and my blood pressure is 115/65 and have a resting heart rate of 50. I now weigh 190 pounds and back in a 34. I run 3 or 4 10Ks a week at work during lunch and run 12+ miles every Saturday. We have done half marathons, 10k and 8Ks every 3 weeks or so. We laugh at a 5k because we don't even sweat. haha. We spin class/cycle 3 days a week for an hour a day and do weights twice a week. The only day we don't work out is Sunday.

Speaking of working out. I honestly don't think it matters what you do, as long as you are moving. P90x, insanity, zumba (for you teenage lady men, lol) it all causes you to move and burn calories. So just do something. I lost my first 50 pounds by just walking and a little calorie control. Plus, I think you need to switch out your workout routine every 4 or 6 weeks, or you body will get used to it. We are going to start on Russian Kettle Ball tomorrow in our garage. It looks fun, and as long as we don't let the ball slip and bust the window out of her car, we should see some good results.

My wife has turned into a 34-year-old gazelle. She constantly finishes first in her age group and in the top 10 women for all our races. I am not so lucky as some of these people around here are lightning fast. But I hold my own and have come away with a few medals.

One thing that we have not really done is diet. Yes, we watch what we eat, but we still eat junk. Just not as much. We also eat tons of veggies and fruit. But, one thing you have to watch out for is liquid calories. I just found out that I was adding almost 700 calories a day to my intake with red wine and salad dressing. That's a nice juicy hamburger. So be careful with that stuff. I had been wondering why I had gone up a few pounds this past month, so there it is.

So with that, good job everyone. Just some take away advice: Keep moving, Don't drink your calories and it may take 20 minutes to eat 1000 calories, but it will take 6.2 mile of running hard to burn it off (for me anyway).

I don't want to lose weight. I'd insert my photo to see if anyone thinks I should lose weight, but I can't figure out how to insert it.

had a pretty steady weight loss going and now stalled at -18lbs.

Going to have to start making more diet changes and stepping up the activity level.

I have lost about 8 pounds in about 5 weeks. I think that's a pretty good pace.

Stopped drinking the cokes (as much) and stopped going out to lunch. I bring it now and I like the food a lot better too.

i'm still holding pretty steady at 215 but I am gradually changing my diet. I think next week I may go full bore again on p90x just cause I like doing it and insanity is already boring me. I'm waiting til after the superbowl to stop drinking again, though... ;)

Recently I returned to the gym i so love (it's a college gym...and im not in college anymore...catch my drift?)

I was out for about two months, only jogging about twice a week instead of working out three to four times. Result?

I got back in last week and weighed the same. i guess that's good.

The important thing to remember guys is that your TRUE health (blood pressure, etc) doesn't really come from a change in weight. Exercising regularly makes anybody more healthy. 'nuff said.

    keep it up yall

JTC, While it may be possible you're avg @ 28% Normal however BF% for adult male is supposed to be 14-17%. 28% would be considered obese, unless you happen to pee sitting down in which case 22- 24% is normal. You cannot get an accurate BMI going by a height vs. weight chart. Skin fold measurements are far more accurate. I didn't catch your height. What is your waist measurement right @ your navel? If it's 40in. or more you're at risk for CAD. Smoke? another risk factor. Blood Pressure above 139 over 89 , another risk factor.

I know, but I have doubts about the average intelligence on here sometimes so I was trying to keep it simple. 14-17 is actually considered athletic by skin fold and... ah fugg it, come to R3 and we can rastle then you can tell me how outta shape I am.:flex:
5'10.5, 35' 31' jeans, 42' chest and 37' gut (around the navel), I max bench 225lbs, but I can throw 135 up over 20x, 40 push ups, 12 pull ups, and swim two miles (70 laps, 1750yds) in 56 minutes (regularly) twice per week, and I drink:drinker:, smoke:jason: and my diet is terrible..... When I was 20% BF (at/around the time I broke my hand last year), I was, or at least, felt pretty ripped.

Exercise needs to be a lifelong commitment. I didn't get real serious until 2 yrs ago while going for my certification. This after 2yrs of cancer treatment on top of it all. For the general masses however, staying active and eating "clean" will get the job done. Keep your metabolism going by eating at least 4-5 times a day. That includes a couple of small 2-300 cal snacks during the day so your eating a protein/carb combination every 2 1/2 to 3 hrs. Lean sources of protien and complex carbs only! Everyone really needs to eat similar to the way a diabetic would. JTC, give up the cancer sticks! You can't reverse the damage thru exercise. Keep up the good work.
