Hey everyone, I joined a couple weeks ago and started posting, but I didn't have any pictures to show you guys... But now I do!

I changed the oil and got it to start up again this weekend, but it was much too cold to take it out for a spin :frown:

I couldn't even take it outside for a nice background, cause our garage was snowed in!!! :frusty:

So anyway, this is an '85 VF500F. I bought it last spring at a local Honda dealer, and so far it's been great!

Here's the engine... looks pretty good

Now here are some things I'd like to fix:

The center stand and exhaust collecter are pretty rusty, so I'd like to get them powder coated, or whatever would be appropriate
    [IMG]

Also, the grab bar is all scratched up, so I'd get that coated along with the other parts
    [IMG]

Here it looks like the previous ownder repaired some damage on the right side of the fairing with this little metal bracket. It works alright, but the right side isn't as tight as the left side, and it moves around a little bit. I'm not sure how I'll fix that yet though.

Finally, the black parts where the foot pegs are attached are missing some paint, so I'll probably get them coated as well. You can also see some parts in there are all rusty, so I'll fix them up while I'm at it.

    That's all for now!

The exhaust collector on my on my '85 looked a lot like yours, a little wire brush action followed by flat black BBQ grill paint improved the look considerably.
Great bike, you'll have lots of fun when the snow finally melts.

Looks nice. Try some black paint, much cheaper than coating.

Black BBQ Grill paint... that's not a bad idea! I think I'll give that a shot, at least for a short term solution.

I used header paint on mine. It's high temp and it looks pretty good. I touched up the motor and pipes as well. You can sort of see before and after in the pics in my gallery. The one with just the bike is before and the one with me in it is after.

Hey Chris, welcome. You ride the bike that got me into riding, loved that thing when it came out. Unfortunately never owned one, but I'm looking for a 500 now to play with. If I find one, I'll check back. Keep her sweet and don't be too tempted by the mediocre weather.

Thanks! I was really surprised to find it in such good shape myself.
Someone must have taken good care of it!

    Yea you!

My only Interceptor nowadays is a VTR 250. A VF500 may be a good idea!

Any good high temp paint will work fine, but if money is not a big consideration, powdercoating is incredible, and getting cheaper every day!

Yeah I agree, powder coating looks really nice... I think I might just paint the exhaust collector and save the grab bar and the pieces by the footpegs (dunno what they're called) to get coated, since they're more visible.

Awesome bike. These 500s can still run in the twisties. They are light, narrow and nimble. From what I hear, they are very popular for amateur racing.

Very nice looking bike. I also have 85 VF500. The body work on yours looks better than mine, the left faring is cracked on mine. And you have the stock pipes.. mine has Kerker slip on's. I like the sound it has, but it would be nice to be a little quieter. I have had a cop stare at me as I drove by more than a couple times. I love the V4's ,they have plenty of mid range power and keep pulling to the redline. The Honda specs on this say it makes 66HP peak, pretty good for a 22 year old bike. The new Kawi Ninja 650R is only making 68, and it is fuel injected and has 150 more cc's. V4's just rock.
Your has a slightly different color scheme than mine, the blue and red are reversed. Have fun with it, just use good oil and keep up on the maint. The 500's are supposed to be less prone to the cam problems that the 750's , but a high quality oil, and regular changes are cheap insurance against it.

Here is a pic of mine.

My first bike that I got early last spring was a Chinese made dual sport...sold as a Roketa... It was slow 70MPH MAX, but easy to ride, and CHEAP!!! paid $900 new in a crate, and I figured a dirt bike can always be handy, and fun to go on the trails with. Here is pic of that one...

Wow man your bike looks really sharp!
I've been looking all over for some aftermarket pipes like yours, but I haven't found any yet. The stock ones are okay, but they're so quiet! If I'm doing anything over like 60, I can't even hear the engine over the wind!

You might be able to take off the stock mufflers, and find some aftermarket slip on that has the same diameter.

Same fix I used on my 750 and it's held up great.

Do you know of any in particular that would fit?
