    Hey guys,

I've just found this site searching google and it seems like a very nice community! Anyways, originally I had been searching for a vf750 or 1000 interceptor when I came across a nice 3rd gen vfr750. This led me to looking into the bikes more and I think it's more what I should be looking for.

I have come across a bike near me which fit the bill. It looks in good shape, the owner says it's in perfect shape mechanically and electrically. The only "problem" is that there are 91 000km (56 000 miles) on the bike. This makes me a bit nervous but after looking around, there are TONS of these bikes with crazy high mileages. Is 91k something I should be worried about? Is there anything in particular I should be looking for. The owner is asking 2500 negociable, I was thinking about offering 2200.

    Thanks
    Alex

Miles are not and issue, that bike will go another twenty years easily. I would just make sure the R/R is working correctly or the price is adjusted to have it replaced.

Thanks for your reply toe cutter. Ah yes, I've read about this infamous issue. How can I tell if everything is working correctly? At best, I'll have a look around and a short ride on the bike. Also, around how much is is to replace these should I need to?

there are sites such as Wire My Bike that sell R/R plus they have a new wiring kit that rectifies the problem. that being said these bikes are hard to kill. abou the only way to kill one is to wreck it. but then some bozo on this site will buy it and fix it right back up..

Good luck with the finding/buying a VFR. remember when you buy it you have effectively 24 hours to post pictures of it up here or the bike is forfeit and gets delivered here ..to me and I will have auction it off to the highest bidder....( so far no one has bid up to my reserve prices)....

Welcome to the site. The miles aren't bad at all for a bike that's 20 years old. If the bike hasn't been neglected I bet it will out last you.

I saw a '99 with 160k [257km] on it. It didn't burn oil and sounded good!

It would probably be a good idea to do a valve clearance check to see if they are in spec.

I would ask the owner to meet you at a dealership where the service dept should be more than willing to test both the stator and R/R. I takes about ten minutes. The other option is to go to a dealer and have them demonstrate this test on a bike for you and then grab an inexpensive multi meter and perform the test with the current owner.

Yep, it's pretty easy. On '98 model it requires removing the seat. I am not sure on a '92.

If the R/R is toast the bike won't run..if it ain't it will run. They go sometimes.. There is no real solid test. IMO the owner will know about the problem and has experience with same. Ask him.. There are fixes as has been pointed out. Need to is a great idea.. Have to is in your future.

That is not a shitload of miles for that bike. Ask to see maintenance and service records and if the owner is the original owner ect. Pricewise, not a clue.. Canadian money is for the birds..;)

Canadian and US dollars are about equal right now. I think that is a good price if the bike is minty otherwise.

As far as checking the r/r, take a multimeter with you and measure the voltage across the battery terminals (access by just removing the seat) with the bike at idle and then increase revs to 4-5000 rpm. Voltage will normally go from around 12 to 14-15vdc.

As you note, that's not especially high mileage in regards to what the mark is capable of (see below).
But it is enough miles that you should keep in mind and ask about the following:

Suspension - is the original shock still in use or has it been rebuilt or replaced and if so when?
Have the front springs been replaced?
I wouldn't say either of these should have been done, a test ride will tell you if you like the handling or not. But they are items to be aware of and may require attention.

Likewise ask whether the front wheel bearings and the steering head bearings have ever been replaced.
I've had to replace wheel bearings roughly every 40 to 50,000 miles and the bike is in the range where the OEM head bearings often need replaced.

None of these are deal breakers. - These are is inherent issues you should be aware of when buying a higher mileage bike, the bearings aren't very expensive, though if you have to pay someone else to do the work, replacing the head bearings can get pricey.

Hahaha I'll definitely post some pics should I end up buying the bike and the snow clears away!

Thanks, I'll speak with the owner and see if he know of any history regarding this problem on the bike. Changing it out doesn't seem that costly anyways so the upgrade in reliability seems worth it. The USvsCAD exchange rate is so close to 1 it's negligible and that has been the case for years now.

The owner says the wheels have some scratches but the rest he says is in great shape. I should be going to see the bike this weekend so see for myself. I thought the price was reflective of the mileage and reasonable.

Thanks MapMaster, I'll be sure to bring a multimeter and perform the test this weekend if the owner is ready to have her fired up for the season. I'm thinking if everything is ok and it rides nice, I'm willing to take the "risk" and just fix anything that comes up in the future. I perform all the work on my bike so no cost for labor minus some beers should some friends want to help out.

That bike is better than average for touring, so consider this trip at least once: Friday The 13th Port Dover Ontario Canada

Canada's version of Daytona Bike Week with thousands of bikes new and old all over town !!!

Finally Canada acknowledges it's gay bikers. I really liked the crossdressers in the horn hats. Reminds me of Wagner..
