So I just got the viffer out for the summer and am realizing im only getting about 150 miles to a tank? I have a 91 and calculating out that the vfr has around a 5 gallon tank I think it comes out to 32 MPG or something. Is this around normal for a 91? I did notice that I do not have the heat shield that goes under the tank to help with the heat so my tank gets warm. And I notice a slight gas smell if I'm at a stop light for a while. Maybe the heat is evaporating some gas? Being I don't have the funds to spend the $100 for the heat shield, would that heat shield aluminum tape stuff work since that is cheaper?

Anyone?? I know there is a gas mileage thread on here but I couldn't find it. And would like to know if not having that heat shield would make a big difference?

My 2000 holds pretty tight to 47 mpg normal pace riding. I would think you should get in the 40's unless you are riding the piss out of it.

I usually get 35 or 37is on my 98 although on trips I have gotten over 40 before. I ride a lot of twisties and don't believe in taking off slow. Also I run a power commander and worn out after market slip on.

I'm unfamiliar with the heatshield you speak of. my tank has a foam pad on the bottom and it rests on the airbox. Is your airbox not directly below your tank? (pardon my ignorance of the 91s)

The heat shield tape alone is not enough, went through this same debacle on my 2nd gen. I ended up ordering some different heat shield material after much searching, and it has made a huuuuge difference in the temperature of the tank.

Here's what I ended up purchasing: < Amazon.com: DEI 050501 2' x 21" Floor and Tunnel Shield - 3.5 sq. ft: Automotive >. I bought this, which was plenty to do the whole underside of the tank... think I have about 1/3 of the sheet leftover. I used aluminum foil tape on all the edges once I had cut and spliced in all the pieces of the heat shielding. (Can be had at a hardware or Lowe's for relatively cheap)

    PICT1429.jpg

This is probably the minimum shielding you need, it has made a world of difference in tank temperatures. Looking at the photo, I would even put more shielding on there... covering the sides of the tank as well. Might do that the next time the tank is off.

Also, your mileage seems a little low. I think mine seems low at 37 - 39 ish. A thorough carb clean and sync would probably make a difference. Haven't done either of these yet for this season, so I'm hoping that's all I need.

Reg - the foam thing is what I was talking about, did not know what it was called. I don't believe in taking off slow either and also have a jet kit, k&n and micron pipe (my bike is a Cali model with all the emissions crap taken off too if that makes a difference)

Jcarp - the stuff I got was not heat shield tape it is "heat shield wrap, adhesive backed. Protects against radiant heat up to 1100°F". I got it from JEGS website. Cost just about the same as yours for a 4" 10' roll. Figured 1100° should be good. Its a fiberglass type of material I think. Put it under my entire tank and will see if it helps this weekend.

Cool. I just looked it up, and it does look like it is relatively thick with a fibrous backing... that's what I found was necessary over the standard 'heat tape.' The reflective metal layer on mine was almost too thick to cut with scissors, which made slicing it up to fit under the tank a real pain. If your stuff does the trick, I'll have to remember that. I'll bet it was cake to cut and make it fit!

Oh yeah, easy enough to cut with a standard household scissors. And I still have about 2 feet left.

Well before I could only get 150 miles to a tank and now I am at 146 miles and my gas light has not even come on yet. My gas gauge is right above empty but I'm guessing I'm going to get somewhere around 180 miles to a tank give or take. I just recharged my k&n air filter also so hopefully that helps my gas mileage, that thing was freaking dirty!!! My gas tank still gets kind of warm but nowhere near what it used to be. I also forgot to add that I have a chain and sprocket kit 1 down in front and 2 up in the back I don't know how much different my mileage is actually going to be with that setup? I know my odometer isn't completely accurate but idk which way I am off with that gearing?

that sounds about right to me, then. I expect the sprocket change puts you riding in higher revs more and your mileage is about what I see on mine. I'm sure if we both went to stock settings we'd see better mileage, but where's the fun in that?

I usually get to 120-130 miles before the gas gauge reads nearly empty(no light on though) and then I fill up. Surprisingly, I nearly always put in a little over 3 gallons. Sounds about normal but I'll have to give that heatshield a trick since I ride almost exclusively in the city. It doesn't help that lately I don't leave 1st gear from stoplight to stoplight.

I have a full two brother's exhaust, jets, air filter, and stock gearing. I'll see how it is after I clean the air filter and subsequently, after I put on new chain and sprockets(stock ratio)

I'm not real big on getting the most gas mileage that I can, considering that I take power over gas mileage on every single vehicle that I do and have owned. But I wanted to get better gas mileage out of her and now that I have that it's time to go have some fun. Yeah going back to stock gearing after having this gearing would be no fun at all!!

    I'm avergaing about 5l/100kms on my 97.

I can very easily get 400kms (240miles) to a tank.

I do realize this is a 3rd & 4th generation thread about gas mileage but i wanted to add/ask something. Whats the normal gas mileage for a 5th generation? Last time i filled up i got 1 bar below full on the digital guage. Today on my way home from work the last bar was flashing so I decided to stop for a fill up - I was at about 166 miles. Ive seen some people post that their 5th generations are running about 140 miles per tank so im assuming mine is pretty up to speed on things but still wanted to ask what is normal for the 5th gen. Thanks guys and gals.

My average with stock 3rd gen is like 43 mpg and I can drive about 200 miles until the gauge shows empty, then 50 miles until I have to switch to reserve and still more than 25 miles until the tank is empty. I've tried that once with the spare canister with me to really see how long I can go since the gauge does actually just show the first half of the tank.

According to everything I've read on the net, jo-jo's are out and poppers are in. Progress progresses. I will report on the poppers/mile as soon as my data points are compiled, but you dudes up there in the North will have to do your own conversion to metric..;)
