Another chain question

    Hi, I've been lurking around with my 2006 and the info on this forum are fantastic! I've been riding super sports till I had to commute on long high ways and my boys got a little too uncomfortable with the tank.
    Anyway, I've got a question in regards to the chain and sprocket. When riding in high gears at cruise speeds, I've noticed a chain slapping noise coming from the bottom. However the chain was adjusted and tightened properly. I had a look at the sticker and the sprocket as gone past the indicator so I thought the noise might have been from a worn chain.

    I bought a new set of chain and sprockets, installed them, and the sprocket is still past the indicator mark to replace. I did a couple of commutes, the chain noise is still there however the bike is more responsive. I'm pretty sure with a fresh new chain and sprockets the sprocket should move back to the "New chain" indicator and the noise would disappear. The only way to move the sprocket edge closer to the "new" mark was to loosen the chain and increase the slack.

    Any thoughts?

    You don't say if you're the original owner or not, or if it was the original chain that you replaced, or what mileage is on it, so there are a number of possibilities:

    Check the link count of the new and old chains & compare to what's recommended for that generation. Many times a replacement chain comes with more links than needed and you have to remove some to get the proper length for the bike.

    Other possibility is that you have a sprocket combination with fewer teeth than standard. Previous owner(?) may have changed them, if you just replaced them with a similar tooth count w/o checking what the standard is, that would give you the same result.

    Your chain is to long sound like it. Let me check for the sprockets size and the lenght. I believe it 110

    It is confirm 110 link, your sprocket should be
    Front 16T
    Rear 43T

    +1 on chain too long. That was my first thought. Reason being, you should have adjusted your rear hub forward on the bike so your indicator mark is back to the original position. If you did not adjust this, your chain is too long. Mine is 17T, 43T and my chain length is 108 links.

    To my knowledge I think it was the original RK chain on the bike and did this service at approx 16xxxkm. The chain set I purchased is a 530 110 link with 16 front and 43 rear. I'm more concern with the chain slapping sound because it does my head in. I'm not sure if its because the previous super bikes I've owned had loud exhausts so I couldn't have heard it and now that I'm riding something more quiet so the sound is more prominent. It's like a wining chain noise.

    Most aftermarket front sprockets dont have the rubber damper like the OEM honda one has, and as a cosequence can create a whining sound. Maybe thats what you are hearing.
    IMO the chain wear guide on the swingarm is next to useless as its so easy to misread it.
    If you have 110 links and new sprockets, all should be good.
    Also the VFR doesnt like to be lugged, and its happier if you keep the revs over 3500 -4000. You can get a "chuffing" sort of sound from the chain area if you lug it too much.
