Hey I am new to motorcycles and have been looking at VFR's a little bit (I really like their styling)and I found an 85 VFR700 and I was wondering how difficult it is to find replacement parts for them. I would like a bike that would be a good commuter but for right now I am looking at it as a project. Any info would be appreciated.
    Thanks Ethan

you'd be better off with a VFR 86-87 rather than a VF 83-85. replacement parts can be somewhat difficult to come by but it all depends on what you need. There are far more running issues with the VF's.

Cam chain tensioners, soft cams, cam followers, oil to the top end, the valves can be tricky to adjust........pretty much a laundry list of things that could go wrong that were not an issue with the next generation.

okay cool. Yeah I am have also seen a couple others that were both 87's. One of them the guy bought it with 20,000 miles running and he said after he bought it (put in new plugs and battery) then it wouldnt start. He is asking $850 for it. Does that sound like it could be reasonable or just someone else's mess?

Certainly looks nice enough in that one pic, if the other side looks as nice it'd be worth a personal appearance at that price. If in fact it 'just ran', then the problem isn't likely to be anything serious.

I know I need to check out the gas tank for rust and other porblems what esle should I keep a look out for and look at and ask about when I go out and look at the bikes in person? Like with the bike i listed above would there be any way of telling for sure that the bike had recently been running? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks
