As I posted in the general disucussion board, my new (to me) VFR is having some charging problems. In a nutshell, I ran it at low RPMs for about 4 or 5 miles, and depleted the battery. I happened to stall, and didn't have enough juice to start her back up. I'm not jumping to the conclusion that the R/R is bad, but I do think it's likely. I borrowed a voltage tester for the weekend... but I'm not entirely clear on what to test. I don't have a shop manual yet, so I don't know what the voltage readings are supposed to be. I understand that I'm looking for a corroded or loose main ground connection, as well as any other bad/loose connectors in general. I also understand that I should measure the voltage between the battery and the frame, and that number should be low (or zero), since that's the way the current is "leaking." So can anyone run me though what troubleshooting tests I should run, and what the voltage readings should be accross various points? Better yet, if you could post a link to a website on the subject (they have to exist, but I can't seem to find it via google) I'd very much appreciate it. Wiring diagrams would be also appreciated. Here are the basic facts that I know: 1. The battery ran near-dead (wouldn't start, but the lights were still bright) about a month ago. I put it on a tricke charger and the battery took a decent charge. Enough for 2 90-mile rides before my ill-fated trip the other day. So it might simply be a crap battery, but I doubt it. 2. I've noticed some salt deposits around one of the terminals (can't remember if it's + or -). There was also a few drops of some fluid on the battery when I bought it. I carefully wiped it away, it hasn't re-appeared. 3. Bike has about 7,500 miles on it. It's pretty clean, so I'd hope the connectors aren't all crudded up. R/R is stock. The battery doesn't look stock. At least, it doesn't say "Honda" on it. Thanks! Rob
I don't know if this will have what you're looking for, but the Service Manual can be found here: http://vfrworld.com/forums/parts-se...nloadable-parts-catalogs-service-manuals.html
This page has a good flowchart that will guide you through testing your RR. I'm willing to almost put money on it that your stock RR is toast. Don't take my word for it though. Follow the flowchart and know for sure. http://www.electrosport.com/electrosport_fault_finding.html
