Hey there, My '85 VF500 has been developing some increasingly faulty blinkers. Typically, I'll hit the switch and nothing happens. Then, randomly, the blinker will start working again. Other times, it gives me one blink then gives up. The problem seems to be worse when it's cold or wet. Today, while I was trying to fix the problem, I was doing a little bit of troubleshooting. With the engine off but the ignition on, I could hear the blinker relay click once for every input on the switch (left, cancel, right). If I left it to one side (left for example), it would start ticking very feebly and intermittently, but without any sort of light action. Do you folks think that my problem is a failing blinker relay or shoddy wiring? Or both? Thanks! Me_Rock
Hard to diagnose without checking everything over. You're going to have to check the light and wiring with a current and see if it works reliably, you may have an intermittent light because of shoddy wiring too, I would check all the wiring from the light back, make sure the grounds are attached well and if all checks out, move forward to the blinker relay.
I went to CycleGear today and saw that they had an LED flasher relay for Hondas. My bike still has incandescent bulbs, but the flasher was only $20, so I decided to give it a shot and return it if it didn't work. I was able to install it right there in the parking lot and it worked fantastically, despite the fact that it was 45 degrees F.
