*bump* If it is the shock, I already know what I'm getting. (Jamie, I might need your advice as I will be buying the kit from your website)

I think you just need to put more air in it. Theres a nob at the top of the shock where you can select 1 through 4 how much.snap back pressure you want. I just bought an 84 and my hose isnt even there. Seems more like overflow for condensation.

Are you buying the oil mod kit from jaime? I need one for my new engine! Only 10000 miles! I want to protect her!

    A couple of things:

    - The dry-rotted hose you see is just a drain in case something gets inside the bellows. It doesn't matter at all.
    - Do not put any air into the shock. That just makes things even worse (performance wise).
    - You can try messing with the damping knob, but don't expect much. Once again, it's best served on #1 which is still pretty bad.

Pretty much the stock shock is going to hold up the rear when the bike is sitting still but that's about the only thing it is good at. Those units were pretty poor performing when new and they certainly have not aged well. The best thing to do is replace it with something else!

    Good luck!

+1 on replacing that shock, they were mediocre at best when completely new, now it is an overbuilt pogo stick that will affect handling.

I am still yet to find an oil mod kit. thanks for the shock advice, it just makes me a little nervous when I can feel the rear-end kick out when i'm going around a corner and hit a bump. just feels like the shock does a really poor job at keeping the tire in contact with the road.

jamie, I have heard rumors of you making/selling this mod but I cant find it on your website. can you confirm or deny this? If not I am even having trouble finding a detailed diy on how to do the "drill and tap" mod like the old hrc bikes.(or so someone on vfrdiscussion says so).

so I have been riding my bike alot this summer (my car is kinda on jackstands getting alot of needed maint.) and I have been becoming alot more comfortable with it. One day I can particularly remember was on my way to work. The road I take has a few good turns in it, and I will go fast but not really push it. this particular day I happened to push it without even thinking about it and all of a sudden BAM!!! I'm doing 85 in this medium-tight sweeping corner and it feels 100% natural. As I was going into the corner it felt normal, under control but still scary. then about 1/4 to 1/2 way through it the bike felt like it just "dropped" into place and I was gone like a rocket. It felt so cool. As soon as my car is finished up I'm going to get the rear suspension fixed and continue my hunt for a oil mod kit.

The oil mod should be available from Dave Dodge. I emailed him a little less than a year ago and the kit goes for about $300. Best pre-made kit you can find with the oil filter adapter.

this is the email I received from him august of last year

"We still make and sell the bolt-on filter adapter style oil mod kit and sell it direct for $269.00, plus 12.00 for Priority Mail shipping within the US. I have been out of them for a while, but currently packaging kits to ship from my second production run this week.
We accept credit card orders by phone, and also accept PayPal payment.

    Hope this helps!

I bought/installed the daugherty racing rear shock kit and I absolutly LOVE it. that and the fact that I finally have the carbs set just right and the spark plugs in there more than hand tight my bike is amazing to ride. Next mod is a Kerker 4-2 exhaust that only took me the last 3 years to find.

    Oil Mod is a mistake.

it's like government, create a new problem in an attempt to fix an old one. Many people on record associated with Honda back in the day say oiling isn't the issue or the fix. Oil Mod is internet rumor and backyard mechanic fixes like gutting the airbox and the exhaust.

No one has any facts or real test data to support a theory and or prove insufficient oiling

Don't waist your money trying to fix the rear shock. I spent money on a last ditch effort to flush out and refill my rear shock. I only waited time and money. I was almost thrown from my bike due to my shock staying compressed when I hit a pot hole.

I finally called Jamie and talked with him over the phone for quite a while. We figured out what I was looking for, including raising the rear height.

My shock arrived and it fit just as stated. It now rides like a new bike. I can take turns much smoother and it does not feel like its going to kick out from under me any more. Rides very smooth, worth every penny. Don't waist any money in the bike till you replace the crappy unreliable factory shock.

Dave Dodge is having some problems. You may want to read this topic before dealing with him.

the shock is amazing Jamie, the bike rode so much better with your shock on it. will I need a new one from you or will the one from my vf700 work fine in the 750 I am getting? (I'm sure they are the same) it is an '84 vf700 frame with a 750 swapped in by a dealer.

You bet, the VF700F and VF750F use the same shock. Enjoy!
