The front tire on my 86 vfr700 is wearing in a sawtooth pattern in the tread on both sides of the tire, I wondering if anyone could give me any insight on why its doing this. is the suspention tuned wrong ? if so how do i tune it? could something be wore out and in need of replacement?

It always helps diagnosing problems to state the mileage on your bike !!

What air pressures are you running, and how often do you check ?? How many miles on the tire ?

Not sure why you would say that Toe. I've seen Bridgestones do it more often than Dunlops. One thing about most bias-ply tires (which would be standard on the '86) - if the tire pressures aren't maintained very close to the optimum they can show some pretty funky wear patterns.

post upa picture anyway.... if you are "scalloping on both side of the tire I would say air pressureif it is onlt on one side I would say your out of alignment... those 86 VFR's are the biggest piece of turd that Honda invented... I would just get rid of it.....

Yes it a dunlop, the bike has 21000 miles on it, it might be a turd but I like it. The tire is wearing on both sides but more on the left side I checked the pressure it was 28 psi so yes it was low and seems like I might have alignment issue too.

Too slow of a rebound is known to cause scalloping. And since the early bikes were amazingly undersprung, chances are you would benifit from $130 worth of front springs.

It's important to change the rear spring as well. Keeping the front from folding underneath you like cheap lawn furniture without addressing the rear as well will affect the balance in the corners.

    How many miles on tires?

My initial guess is Dunlop+mileage+pressure. While all tires scallop to some degree scalloping on Dunlop tires seems to be more pronounced thus mor noticeable. This could be from their tread design or something they do in tire construction. Some models of other tire mfg also share the more pronounced scalop pattern.

The more nformation you share the better off people here can assist.

Left side does wear more than right that is normal. This is more noticeable when the used tire is deflated and off the rim. Most people don't change their own tires and never get to see the tires true wear pattern. When inflated and on the rim these subtle patterns are hidden.

    Now wait a minute, TC.

Dunlop motorcycle tires are made in a local AMERICAN factory by AMERICAN workers who specialize in manufacturing quality AMERICAN tires for AMERICAN motorcycles and represent one of the oldest and steadiest industrial plants still left here and employing hundreds. So please don't knock it, OK, cuz MADE IN AMERICA still means quality, doneit? I believe that all the Made in America Dunlop tires sold in the USA possibly come from this one plant.

    *************
    Race tires too.

The entire supply of Dunlop motorcycle tires used in racing in the USA come through the factory here--all inported from England or Japan, i believe-- and the Factory Team Truck operates out of Buffalo, with Jim Allen and crew of engineers and fitters.

    It's one of three things:
    1) pressure
    2) headstock bearings worn
    3) wheel bearings.

    Unless the tires are ancient.
