I essentially got a 1986 HONDA VF500 for free from a friend, he stored it 10 years ago.

This is what I plan to replace:
    All Fluids
    Battery
    Tires
    fork seals and fluid

    anyone else have suggestions?

If there was fuel in it, you will be cleaning the fuel tank, & reserve tank, & rebuild the carbs.

he said he properly stored it and the fuel was drained, but i am not 100% sure as I have not messed with it. But I will look out for that and take the proper steps.

Also i am hearing people talk about valves, what do I need to check there? also does anyone suggest a certain kind of oil.

I have an 83 VF750 She runs great.
Just have the valve & cam assemblies inspected per maintenance schedule.
Oil is really what you feel comfortable running.
    I like Lucas oil products.
Talking oil here is like talking about politics or religion!

You can run some sea foam through it and see how it runs, but most likely you will have to pull the carb assembly, and clean out the carbs. Don't remove the carbs from the metal plenum!

Read up everything that you can here. There is a ton of information here on every aspect of this bike.

    Good luck!

Probably air in the line or failed master cylinder. Is the master cylinder cap screw stripped, or just being stubborn? A firm tap with an impact wrench with the right sized Phillips head should do it if it's the latter.

Here is how I deal with Stuck screws on an almost daily basis: Take a bolt that is the same size as the head of the philips screw, Hold it agianst the head of the screw with a pliers & smack it with a hammer. What you are doing is shocking the stuck bolt or screw, If it won't loosen try it agian, have had to shock them 2 or 3 tymes.
The guy I bought my bike from buggered the screw heads on my Clutch master, & with some patiance I had them out in no tyme.

I got the clutch resolved, I just add fluid and bled it, rode it around and its good as new.

I started it up, took it for a drive and it needs tires, a chain and fork seals, i can handle tires and a chain but I have not changed fork seals and fluid before. Can anyone on here tell me if it is something i can do or should I just bite the bullet and take it in?

So far i have done some cleaning, still looking for recommendations on tires and possibly some advice on rebuilding the forks or just changing the seals, the bike has 13K miles.

Also looking for OEM turn signals but I can be patient for that.
