vf500f valve adjustment questions

    Synchronize the carburetors using a manometer. This is a requirement after adjusting the valve lash.

    My bet is the engine will quiet right down.

    Huh? I didn't pull off/touch/breathe on the carbs at all. Could they still be out of synch that badly?

    I will say that it was harder to start/run (even though I did get it to run and rode it slowly around the block once) and I had to open the idle screw up a little in order to get it to stay running.

    I've got the carb stix for this, just had no idea they'd need adjusting if I never touched them.

    It isn't that they were off, but because of the valve adjustments you will have to sync the cabs to match what you have done.

    Well, if it keeps me from having to try this again, I'll give the synch a try and report back. Can't hurt.

    Remember to flick the throttle a few times after every screw adjustment to be sure the linkages and buterflys have settled into their new position.

    I like the advice, AND the tool you show in the foto. Home-made? I like the gauges better than trying to equalize tubes of mercury-like substance (here in CA). Got instructions if you made it yourself?

    Got around to doing the carb synch today (as well as a water pump o-ring swap) and...it helped a little, but I still hear some ticking. So...re-check the valve adjustment or ride it a little and see if it quiets down?

    Those of you that have done this: did it run quieter after you put a few miles on it? Mine is still a little loud, but I'm sure the valves are right b/c I triple-checked them before I buttoned it all back up, and I was very (waaaaay overly) slow doing this for the first time. I synched the carbs and get them pretty close, but I still have some ticking. I haven't driven it at all really, less than .2 miles since the valve adjustment. I accept that I may have to do this all over again, but thought I'd ask first.

    I am confident mine are set to the correct clearance and I also have some ticking/noise. I think it's just a characteristic of the engine. Put a few thousand miles on it and check them again. A little noise is better than none at all, as none would indcate that the clearances are too small and the valves might not be seating correctly, leading to burnt valve seats. With care these engines are capable of large mileage. There is a nice example on Ebay UK atm with 42.5K miles.
