Hey, thought i'd introduce myself here.

    Name's Rusty

I've been into Subaru cars since I could drive,

Bought my FT500 Ascot in Highschool, it was/is a piece, made it work, drove it to school and back, then to work and back.

i've recently moved further from work, and realize i wanted a better bike for the longer (40mile one way) commute, and a funner bike.

Enter the VF500F. a friend (consequently a subaru friend) had me help him with his car at his parents garage. I notice a '95 Porsche 911 under a car cover, and directly behind that, an old interceptor.

I ask him about them. His dad got sick about 7 years ago, refuses to sell them, but is not longer physically capable of driving.

a couple weeks go by, he asks me if i'm still interested. apparently the wife flexed her muscles and now.... $300 later... ITS MINE. (though needs work, see the Gen1-2 section for info there)

Welcome. Well, Rusty is the right name for what you have as well. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but those VF's should all be put out of their misery. They are very old, very fragile, spare parts are very hard to get (and a gamble when you do) and mixed maintenance usually, and they will nickel and dime you to death even if you get it running. My advice: Part it out on here and buy a newer viffer. 4th gen and up. You will have much less headaches.

    Cheers,

Stop hurting my bike's feelings! Everyone always slams 1st gens all the time! All the money that I've ever spent on the bike was on upgrades, and never on engine parts/ maintenance (except oil, filters etc). If they were taken care of, the first gen's are good strong, reliable bikes. If they were beaten on and left in trash condition, well that's another story. When your 6th gen is 25+ years old, it will probably be the same story. Assuming that his bike isn't junk to start, he will probably enjoy it for a while with few/ no problems.

    But by the way:worthless:

I love the looks of an old VF500. Friend of mine had a nice one until he crashed it. Kinda like the F14 Tomcat that ole Maverick used to rip around in. Awesome plane, looks sweet, but when you have 45 hours of maintenance per 1 hour of fly time it is time to retire it, and that is what they did.

More power to you. I was just trying to save you the troubles you probably will encounter, but if you would like a good challenge and understand it is gonna be a challenge to get whatever you need, more power to ya.

    Yes, i know it is....

BUT i can say that it is a VERY CLEAN specimen.... There are 3 scratches on the left fairing under the tank, and a couple on the right fairing under the seat. it's got some "iforgotwhich" brand Slip on Mufflers, and the paint is PRISTINE, no fading, no dents in the tank, front fender is clean, lower fairing has a couple tire marks. No drips, no grime, only dust from sitting.

If you find one that hasn't been thrashed and you continue the maintenance on it, then you shouldn't have any problems with it. I've owned a total of 4 '86 500s for a period of about 20 years and have never had any real issues. Also, I agree that without pictures, the bike doesn't exist!

How many VF's on here have fallen prey to the valve problem?

anyway take care of the new toy and keep up with the maint. and the bike will serve you well.
