Most people believe the geometry of the 5th gen is helped significantly by raising the rear end. They also believe the 929 shock is a significantly better unit for several reasons including the fact that it has rebound damping.

SO, before ditching that sexy undertail exhaust; Get the 929 shock which will greatly improve the handling of that bike. You just don't know what you are missing until you ride with good suspension. Adding the 929 with an extended spacer will shift the bottom out position lower and could prevent interference with the wheel and the exhaust. It would be hard to know for sure one way or the other without performing some measurements. If for some reason you are not normal like the rest of us and don't like the added rear height, the spacer can always be made shorter and the exhaust can be thrown out in favor of a stock system :puke: .

More good stuff for me to think on. Thanks, Tink. I also don't like the stock exhaust set up and I know custom exhaust work can get pricey. I'm just trying to fix the one problem but am learning that it may have to be a two-part solution.

Here are some measurements if anyone is interested:

--Without anyone on the bike, the smallest clearance is 43 mm.
--With the rider(me), weighing 180, the smallest clearance becomes 23 mm.
--With me and my wife as a passenger (me 180 + wife 135 = total 315), the smallest clearance becomes less than 7 mm. Yikes!

Good luck with getting it sorted out, Rye.

While its certainly a matter of personal preference, I can tell you that many 5th Gen riders covet an undertail exhaust, myself included. They are few and far between. Aside from its uniqueness, its downright sexy.

Just make sure you're 100% certain you're willing to part with that exhaust if that's the route you choose.

(By the way, dug this up from an old thread. Not sure what the prices are today.

Race tech quoted me about $630 for the fork rebuild.

    Here's the breakdown:
    -$109 for springs
    -$169 for gold valves (rebound)
    -$169 for gold valves (compression)
    -$30 for oil
    -$22 for seals and bushings
    -$135 for labor).

doesn't sound like a lot of sag. That exhaust really does eat up a lot of space.

Like I say, just my opinion..... Based on what I've experienced and everything I've read, the 929 is well worth it. I don't know a single person who installed the shock and didn't like it. It could be an easy fix to your problem but you certainly wouldn't have anything to loose by trying.

If you found a 929 on ebay for $50, I could mail you my mockup top mount to check it out. I wouldn't ride it with that welded up bracket of mine but you can see what you think of the fit and preview the geometry and clearance changes.

If the seals aren't leaking, just dropping the $100 in springs and dropping them down the top yourself is a long way ahead of stock.

Thanks for the offer to send your mockup, Tink. But since Jamie has it prefabed and he'll most likely be doing the work, I'll go with what he's got.

Good thought, Pliskin. I'm not 100% ready to lose the undertail exhaust. But I may lose it anyway if I don't get this problem fixed and the tire rubs it to oblivion, not to mention damage to the tire! Arg!! This is not as simple as I hoped it would be, and it's looking like it won't be as cheap as I hoped either.

Well I may be interested in that undertail if you do decide to part with it, although I know nothing about it (i.e. is it custom, Wolf, condition, age, etc.?)

Put me on the list of potential purchasers if you sell it?

Hey, you can't blame a guy for asking!

Actually I'm glad you did. That exact thought crossed my mind but I wasn't sure if something like that would be worth anything to anybody, given the clearance issue I'm having. But I suppose if one plans to never have a passenger, my exhaust is ideal.

Just out of curiosity, what does your Two Brothers hi-mount look like?

The can on my 2BR looks OK, but has seen better days. Its also an old school can - its aluminum. I bought the bike with it on there, and the mid pipe - for whatever reason - has some dings and dents in it. Could never figure that one out.

    I don't ride 2 up. But at 240#, I ain't no featherweight, either.

Cool. Thanks for you honesty! I will keep you in mind if things come to chopping my exhaust off, but it hopefully won't come to that.

How much gap do you have between the tire and the pavement when the bike is on the factory center stand?

Wish I had a center stand to tell you.
