So this is the deal. I tip the bike over at a stop sign and that very same day I had installed a 12 volt Accessory plug for my GPS. Later on about a week after that happened, my bike died and I ended up having to get it towed. So after that i bought a new gel battery I put it in and everything was fine until it died again on me. I limped it home, took a look at the voltage regulator, and found out it was not charging and saw that the power wire is completely fried. Would this be from the voltage regulator trying to charge a bad battery that will not hold a charge, Or would it be from the 12 volt accessory that I put on there. The 12 volt accessory is one that I bought from an auto parts store and I hooked it up to my license plate light so they go on an off with the ignition. I don't believe that it would be from the 12 volt accessory especially since I have an inline fuse on it. But i don't know much about the electrical side of things. Any input from somebody who has installed a 12 volt accessorie plug on their bike would be great. Any input from somebody better with electrical than me would be great too.

The OEM R/R units are prone to failure and the OEM wiring harness is inadequate to begin with. I've owned two 3rd Gen VFR's and had to replace the harness' and R/R's on both. When you say "power wire" was fried which connection are you talking about? If you pull the right mid panel you will see where the 3 yellow stator wires connect to the main wiring harness. This is also a common point of failure so make sure you check there in addition to the connection from the wiring harness to the R/R itself. Wouldn't hurt to also check the starter relay. Can you take pics of the damage? You can check the link below to see about replacement parts.

No insult to gen 3 and 4 but it is the worst of the worst. Lucky it got this far. Been putting CBRF4I on them for a few years with no further failures and that model R/R grows on trees. Aboot $80 ish bucks on average.

It's from trying to charge a weak battery that won't hold a charge...

A weak battery looks like a short circuit path to ground for the RR, and lots of amps will flow thru the charging wire. If the connectors are oxidized then the joint is a high resistance in the path that gets hotter and hotter as current flows eventually melting anything plastic and burning/melting the wires.

Thanks for the replies. looks like i am going to get the V/R and VFRness from wire my bike. i thought i had an aftermarket V/R alread , it might be but just went out. here are a couple pics of the plug and V/R. I just hope it is not my stator going out, or would the three yellow ones that go to the stator be fried if it was?

This is a picture of my V/R B4 this all happened. This looks like an aftermarket one to me, isn't the stock one a block with no fins at all.

Your R/R is not original, my original one lasted 20 years, I did replace my stator 4 years ago though. I had two R/R like yours and adventually found out that they were'nt really up to the task of doing their job.

I ended up going for a Ricks unit, pretty robust looking compared to the stock garbage. There are some people here that have used the V-Ness or what ever you call it. Your plug is fucked and your gona have to cut back the burnt section and go for some crimp on connectors, (I soldered mine with shrink tubing) then go individually to each leg of your new R/R. I had similar problem with my starter solenoid, burnt to shit, (new starter solenoid along with above method of connectors) happy ending...Also that three phase stator plug is prone to problems, I noticed a cunts hair of a burn mark on the harness from the bike to it, so I eliminated it by soldering the three wires together (minus the white plug)....

I ran a radar detector and used to go right to the battery terminals. I tried using the fuse panel with the clock section, but I was getting lazer falses. Directly to the battery, solved that problem. No bike is perfect, but the journey is Far ouT MaNN...enjoy it, think of the alternative, you could be driving, :nelson:

Got the vfrNESS and new r/r and she charges again!! 14.5 volts at idle. Thanks again everyone. One question though, when reconnecting the yellow stator wires do the need to be in a specific order pluged into the r/r or does it not matter?

The order of the wires does not matter.
