Have a 98 with 35K miles. The bike has been absolutely great. However, my only real complain (other than weight) is the extreme heat that comes from the rear headers on the right side. In hot weather, it just cooks my right foot and can probably fry bacon on the peg. For years noticed my right boot would get hotter than the left and figured it had something to do with the air flow from the right side radiator. It was only when I rode it with a pair of "non-boots" that I realized the immence heat coming from the headers. Are there heat shields for this or some other remedy for this?

The newer models have heat shields on the up pipe. The 5th generation just has it kinda tucked behind a plate around the peg. The cat converter causes most of the heat right there, so removing it would help. Other than that...wear good boots and keep your foot out an extra inch.

Would using an exhaust wrap help this? My '10 is SO hot at higher RPMs that it's really noticeable. I'd love to stop this somehow...

My guess is that exhaust wrap would help. My Gen2 has the same issue.

I'm looking at muffler wrap - the mid pipe heat on my FMF system has melted my boot...

This is what I did. I removed the shield and have no heat issues...

I am very please as this was a very cheap mod and works well..

you can either jet-hot coat the exhaust bits, or, wrap the exhaust in the area directly adjacent to the peg, or, put adhesive back insulation on the inside of the factory heat shield. any combination of these three will solve your issue.

From experience, having all three will definitively end the pain.

25ft (8m) of 1"exhaust wrap - used every last inch, just thought I'd mention that for those curious about how much to buy...

Cable tied in place for the test fit...
