rear wheel : how much 'free spin'

hello,

could someone (or more) tell me how much free spin a rear wheel should have after a firm twist by hand ?

I discovered that the rear brake disc of my vfr vtec is getting really hot, even after a short drive. Went to the dealer, he checked if the brakes are OK and couldn't find anything unusual. Took the rear wheel off, checked the brake pistons and they were OK (his words; i'm a technical noob)
According to him, it's pretty normal because the rear disc has engine heat + less cool airflow, and due to the combined brake system, the rear wheel has less free spin than let's say a CBR with fewer brake power on the rear. ?

Still I really think this isn't normal, and 've been searching this forum and the www but don't find an answer.

So, the bike being on the centre stand, standing on the right side of the bike and give it a spin forward by hand (not full power, but pretty firm though), how much rotation is normal ? Could some of you tell me, or do the test with a VFR 6th gen ? I'll be down on my knees for it :biggrin:

Ok, so I tried spinning the back wheel and got about two rotations all three or four times I tried it. How many are you getting?

I only get 1 rotation, and really after a firm twist by the hand.
A normal good swing does a little bit more than 3/4 of a rotation.

Took off the brake and cleaned pistons, but no difference at all..

 

Mine only does about 1 and a bit turns, but it is cold and the chainlube is quite viscous when cold, I can hear the the brake pads just dragging.
Its normal for the rear brake to get hot because it is used even if you are only using the front brake lever.
If you are worried, perhaps bleed the brakes. Its best done with a vacuum bleeder and follow the correct sequence for the LBS

 

After 1 really strong twist I get 3/4 to 1 rotation. No matter if engine/chain is cold or warm.

Took a testride with complete cold VFR. After 4 miles without any of the brakes applied, the rear brake disc was really hot. I can understand it gets a bit warm due to some friction of the pads, but there's a big difference between friction warm and really hot.

This afternoon I took the bike back to the dealer, and after some testing he admitted it should be a lot smoother. Next week the bike will be in for maintenance/repair.

 

I am no techie but less than a rotation on a stiff spin seems incredibly stiff to me. Mine has no where near that much drag, ever, and I have jsut shy of 100K miles. So several new brakes, chains and sprokets and what have you, and I have not experienced that much drag.

 

sounds like your rear brake is dragging a little. Check and clean the slide pins/bolts and chack the pucks for sticking. They may have crude on the outside that won't let them slide back a few thousands that's needed. The brake pads should barely touch the rotor or have like a couple of thousands clearance.

 

Bike is going in for maintenance/repair of the braking system some day this week.
VFR is under warranty, so no costs for me.

 

Just went out and spun my rear tire. I get 2 1/4 turns almost every time.

Here you can see the rotation of the rear wheel. Note that I use more force than you'ld probably think by watching it. Every time I get a 3/4 rotation. Turning the same way, but with full force, results in 1 rotation, sometimes 1 and 1/4.

Pistons have been cleaned. Still, after a 5 mile ride wild cold bike, and without use of the brakes, the rear disc gets hot. Can't hold my fingertips more than 1 full second on it.

Strange : with the brakepads out, so no contact or friction with the brake disc, the wheel doesn't seem to spin better than with the pads installed. At most 1-2 inches more per rotation.
Chain has been cleaned, rollers in the middle spin free, seems OK to me.

 

After following this thread for quite some time, I tried to check mine.
I have all the passenger peg bracketry in place so getting a consistent force with my spin probably isn't happening, but.....
Mine seems to do the same 3/4 to 1-1/4 spin as yours. Didn't check the disc temperature.
This is on a 2004 non-ABS with 44,000 miles on it and there doesn't seem to have been any problem in the operation of the bike with that amount of drag.
