I didnt want to spend $100+ on the Honda 12v socket. Bought a marine socket for $15.00. Any suggestions on how to wire it? Should I go straight to the battery?

Wire to the battery, but absolutely put a fuse right at the battery end.

Or, you can wire to the accessory plug inside the LH fairing panel which is already fused. It has a 12v constant, 12v switched, and a ground. It also has a 5v switched for USB stuff, but probably not what you're looking for.

Another idea would be to wire to the battery via a relay so you only get 12v when the ignition is on, saves running your battery down if you forget your accessory is plugged in...

Mine is an 800 so I'm not sure how applicable this is to 1200 design but I wired a fused 12 volt direct to the battery and ran it to a merrit plug which sits in the steering head stem (removed the black cal and ran the wires down the tube... This allows me to power phone etc in my tank bad...

Well, shoot! If there is already a fused connector, you just need to make sure the fuse/circuit amperage is adequate for your needs.

But why add a fuse and relay if there's already a switched/fused 12v source on the bike?

    Awesome avatar BTW.

Thanks everyone for the advise. I like the idea from Dangerous Dave but not being too good with electronics I will need a little help before cutting wires. Hey DD, maybe i'll make the 3hr ride from Auburn, IN and you can give me some direction?

I'll grab the diagram I drew out of my toolbox at work tomorrow. That will help. And I didn't cut any wires...I soldered a terminal on the end of the USB lead and plugged it into the connector. Cutting factory wiring is for butchers.

Sorry for the delayed reply. I wish I had a pic to post, but I think you'll get the idea. The accessory plug is up high behind the left fairing panel. It's a square-ish plug with a dummy connector plugged into it with no wires coming out, just to keep water out. If you pull the cap off and look into the connector (wire side facing away from you) with the locking tab facing up, I'll call the top left terminal pin one, top right terminal pin two, bottom left terminal pin three, and bottom right terminal pin four. Pin one (pink wire) is 5v switched for USB powered stuff. Pin two (yellow w/black tracer) is 12v and while I failed to note it, I'm pretty sure it's the switched one. Pin three (green wire) is ground. And pin 4 (white w/green tracer) is 12v and I'm pretty sure it was the constant power wire. I'm going to be back in there pretty soon as winter is coming and I want to get the heat-troller for my gloves wired soon. I'll get pics this time.

Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. I just order the Z-bomb plug to fix 1st and 2nd bog issue and also a Dam Exhaust slip on. Can't wait to get those on. I'll wait for your pics before trying the 12v plug install. Thanks again!

To close this out I purchases a marine socket for $15 and hard wired (with fuse) to the battery. Installed it under the seat. It works great. Honda's socket is $100+ and requires side panel and tank removal to install and is located under the seat as well. Thanks to everyone for tips and advise.

I just picked this up off ebay pretty cheap the other day.

I know it's only utilizing two terminals, but now I can use it to build my own harness to use all of them. Since the wife got me grip heaters for a gift it's getting a little crowded at that connector. I need to find out how many amps that switched circuit is actually rated for.
