It took me a long time to get used to lane splitting, and I generally only do it if traffic is heavy and moving at less than 15-20 MPH. Most people are really good about making room, but there are a few that are obvious about their displeasure. I just figure that they are having a bad day, or perhaps a bad life.

A bit off the main subject, but one of my favorite lane splitting times was being right behind a CHP bike for about 5 miles in nearly stopped traffic. Nobody crowded him; probably a coincidence.

2-3x a week now getting off work I hook up with a Sacramento motorcycle cop commuting home the same route through 3 counties. I lane split with him over 15 miles, never seems to bother him that I tag along. He keeps the speeds legal and sane and the local police just wave as we pass through.

I think maybe that the guys who have not actually done any legal lane splitting, have seen vids of the couriers rather than the more sane version as actually practiced including splitting at stoplights and discovering that the dude in the 64 VW bug who is foaming at the mouth is really Mario Andretti.

Lane splitting is totally normal in my neck of the woods. The funny thing is that I prefer to ride if traffic is bad, because when it's stopped I just putt on up to the stoplights.

I split up until about 30 or so MPH. At that speed I merge back into traffic. Lane splitting at 50+ is not ok in my book.

Harleydoods lane split at the ton. In this case, it's the weight of the bike and rider.

So yesterday afternoon I'm riding two-up with the Mrs. on a two lane highway, and this woman on a side road to my left decides to turn out onto the road right in front of me. Rather than hit the brakes so that I didn't hit her, I swung out and pulled up along side her on her driver's side, knocked on her window and motioned for her to open it, which she then did, and then proceeded to tell her what I thought of her driving skills. She apologized, so I didn't have to kill her, which was just as well because it was starting to rain and I wanted to get home. Maybe next time.

I'm guessing you were on you Bimmer, right? You must have forgotten to turn off your cloaking device. She just didn't see you until you turned it off and knocked on her window. :embarassed:
Good deal she didn't turn a little later, and collect you, your wife and you bike in one disasterous moment, but things worked out ok & no one got hurt :thumb:. Sounds like she may have actually learned a lesson - since she apologized. :bravo:

Anytime when out on a putt, if you see a cage with one or more little motorcycle stickers on the side of the hood, be careful.

Nope. Don't particularly care for it. Only use it for two-up touring (and then only reluctantly). I was on the VFR.

I figured that since you were 2-up you were on the BMW - slightly bigger bike, more seating, etc. So....

Damn, I never new that Honda made cloaking devices an option for the 5th Gen VFRs. :pound:

Fault in Canada is determined by the insurance companies. Police just investigate the factors causing the accident and charge where appropriate. But the jist of you post is correct by the examples you provide, and there may be many more. Sec 162 Motor Vehicle Act of BC is the "Follow Too CLosely" section, which applies only to BC roads. I am sure other provinces have similar legislation.

Are motorcycle not allowed to use the HOV there. I am sure they are in California. I know they can here. Unless it is a "BUS" only of "Bicycle" only lane in which case they are well marked accordingly

The automatic fault thing if ya smack somebody in the rear is basically an urban legend. I hope this doesn't include spanking in certain lustfull moments..;)

Some, but not all bicyclists are so fucking self rightous ya wanna smack em. The gentle approach is to get rid of the ubiquitus apologetic Japanese horn and replace same with a real honker. Ain't figured this one out yet but a horn from a diesel-electric locomotive would work a treat.

Yes.. Use of the HOV lanes in both WA and OR is legal for motorcycles. Just making sport of the bicycle crowd but I hope none of them are reading this. It might give them ideas about making it happen. YIKES!

Another area of pissed off or psycho cagers is the WA State Ferry system. Tons of rules some unexplainable but the loading procedure does make sense. Summer and good weather make for long lines to catch a boat. The drill is walkons first, bicycles next, then motorcycles then cars and trucks. Walkons head for the seating areas, bicycles and motorcycles load to the bow area then the cars and trucks are last. This allows bicycylists and motorcycles folk to buck the line and park whilst waiting in a designated staging area at the head of the line. Many cagers do not know the procedure and do some serious venting from both ends..Unless of course the motorcycle folk happen to be HAMC members.

Now I'm wondering if I should get myself a SAMCRO outfit and make mself look like a bad boy. Maybe some sox first huh?

Well, in my case, I'm sure I shouldn't have been lane splitting at the speed I was, but when the big truck moved over to give me enough room, it was simply too easy and it would have been rude of me not to accept his invitation.

It still doesn't change the fact that I think the 'lady' was being a jerk.

Since rude bicyclists were mentioned, we had an accident a week or two ago where an anesthesiologist was killed on his bicycle. HE ran straight through a stop sing and got ran over by a big truck. I ride bicycles, too, but I know how hard it is for a driver to see you so I'm pretty damn careful and try and keep my fat arse to the right of the lane.

Similar tangent, last week 3 pedestrians killed jaywalking at night wearing black hoodies in Santa Maria. Can you say Darwinism?

Mind Funk - Blood Runs Red - YouTube

Kinda reminds me of this song. Shit does happen to good people, lots and lots of bicycle riders get knocked off by trucks, cars, maybe even alligators here in sunny south Florida. Many motorcyclists die here too, Side bar: Wearing black at night is kinda like wearing camo during the day light hours right?

That still didnt stop me from buying a shweet flat black Arai brain bucket

In my 250,000 + miles on the street , I have gotten very good at knowing what these brain dead drivers are going to do before they even do it, watchin mirrors and just body language helps allot. Have had nim rods open doors while splitting lanes, through coffee out there window ( slowed down for this one , stood up and kicked in her door ), veer left to cut me off plus I'm not the guys you see haulin ass while splitting lanes, I never do more then 10 miles faster then the speed there traveling and when there at a stand still maybe 5-7 miles an hour if that. My HD's have REALLY helped, I notice more cagers are yielding and of course I give them the thank you wave.

Wut a cock-bag, or in her case, a cunt-bag! I got ova 200,000 street miles growing up in north joisy and doing mountain riding along with going into NYC. Now, south FL requires another kind of dynamic riding, been here 15 years, I have gotten cited for slitting lanes and have run too. I pick and choose where I wana head to the front of the line in red light traffic. Always looking out for mr. pig :flip: funny thing is if I was one of "them" I would be immune.

CA is far out, maybe we are behind you by a few years. I look at south FL as the poor mans California  When traffic comes to a dead hault on the express-way in FL, I wont wait, "if its bumper to bumper, and I dont have bumpers, I am not gona risk my arse or my ride." that when I go like you do, 5-7 mph filtering traffic...FTW
