    A couple of years ago I picked up a nice '99 VFR800.

Then just recently I bought some "extras" from a guy who was selling his and was taking off some these extras to sell seperately.

I bought his Power Commander II.

I didn't really give much thought to the idea that there were various generations of Power Commander units until I went to install this one.

So my main question (and complaint) is the lack of information/instructions on properly setting one of these up.

I called Power Commander and the 1st Tech I spoke with was totally lost. He sounded like he had NO knowledge of these units at all and told me most of the data on them had been deleted.

Later he found a little and sent me what he had.

It turns out what he sent wasn't very helpful either.

I got 1 new Map program that wasn't included on the original CD. Also there was a 5-page "Booklet" in Pdf format that was on the PC II, III and IIIR.

The Booklet's fine it shows lots of things you can do with the Maps and what the maps do.

And the 2-Sheet Pamphlet included with the unit tells how to install on the bike and how to adjust the unit MANUALLY.

But nothing discusses "how" you actually install the maps into the PC II using an old Laptop with Serial Port connections (which, luckily, I happened to have kicking around still)

The PC II kit comes with the Serial Port connection cable as well as an Adaptor that uses a 9-Volt battery attached, but NO instructions on how to install the Map (i.e. what position your Ignition Switch should be in when installing, mention of the 9-Volt Battery Interconnector etc.)

Is someone out there familiar with this procedure who could briefly describe it to me?

    Thanks in advance.

Well that advice helped...kinda. Although the software is pretty much the same as on the PCII CD that I already had.

Actually I was looking a little more for "Connect Serial Port Connector, be sure to use the 9V interconnect, Turn the Ignition "On" " etc., etc.

But I got in there and connected up everything as it appeared it should be, then tried a number of combinations with nothing working until I turned the Ignition on and then things rolled.

So everything's loaded as should be and I hope it works out o.k.?

have the bike put on a dyno after you install it. You will not believe how much better your bike will run after they program it to your bike!!
    Well worth the money !!

yeah, that's pretty much it. Until you go and have someone with a dyno really hook it up or so I'm told. I tried a few maps and didn't notice a tremendous diff with the PC2.

Haven't found anyone with a dyno that still supports PCII. Dyno changed their software and apparently the shops with dyno's no longer understand how to do things without software any longer.
