Hi all! I'm currently looking at buying several VFRs and was looking if anyone had some information on what to look out for when buying these bikes, and what/if changes were made throughout the years of the 6th generation VFR. The years of the bikes i'm looking at are 2002 and 2007.
The 2002 to 2005 had a recall made for the regulator/rectifier which the dealer would change for free, so you would want to know if it was done already. The 06 onward had the new regulator/rectifier as standard as well as modification of the VTEC engagement that made it smoother. If all is equal you should consider the 07.
Is the engagement of the VTECH that much more noticeable in the newer models? And the price difference is around 2500 bucks with similar mileage so the tradeoff is really similar.
Don't know if this helps you or not. Vtech is smoother on "07 but not that much different than '02. You will get used to either one, so in the long run it won't make a difference. Just got my new issue of Motorcycle Consumer News which lists used bike values. '07 $6555. '02 $3485. They get their information From NADA. These are average values for the age of the bike with mileage matching their age. Being that they have similar mileage I would check condition closely. Sounds like "02 would be very low mileage for its year. 2002 to 2009 are pretty much the same bike so parts should be available for a long time. If 2002 was in great condition you could do a lot or fix any problem with an extra 2500 bucks in your pocket. Oh, and last thing, ask the owner if he was ever a member of VFR World. They are all goofs but nobody takes better care of their bikes!
If the condition is pretty much the same go for the 02. I had a similar decision to make when I purchased my 06 but the 06 had much less mileage (2200 vs 15000). One thing that swung me though was that the later bikes will give you less trouble down the road. Gaskets, rubber seals and hoses age regardless as to the bikes maintenance so the newer it is the less replacements will need to be done. If you are handy and have the tools then no problem.
This is all great advice. Bottom line it's a VFR. You probably won't have much problem with either one. If you do, you can get help here. Sooo....don't worry too much and buy the one that makes you happy! Enjoy the ride! Let us know and send some pictures of the bike and the smile on your face!
Thanks for all the info guys. It's definately helping me out. Found a awesome deal on a 2007 anniversary edition, but after a couple days of corresponding, it turns out he wants to ship it overseas to me. SCAM ...I hate craigslist.
Hahaha send me money order and I will ride the bike to ur door...... Be patients time will come.
Got a test ride on an 06 today. Man was I really impressed. It's really amazing how Honda has managed to make a 470lb bike feel like a middleweight sportbike. The smoothness of the thing was great too. The VTEC kicking in was barely noticeable at WOT and the power didn't seem to go away as the revs climbed past 10k. Is 5500 a reasonable offer to start from?
$5500 for 06 is a little high. Unless that bike is come with some mods like exhaust sargen seat pciii heli bar.......
I used to have a 2002 and quiet honestly i think it was a great bike, it was exceptionally reliable, comfy, good looking, you cant go wrong with any year model really. Buy the newest/low mileage one you can afford. I put on 13K miles on the 2002 i had and had zero issues with it.
Actually that's a pretty fair price, as of late the used bikes have been up in value since no one is giving away new bikes any longer. Look around, you'll see people selling 2002 for around that price lately. 2006 for $5500 is fair game i think if its in good shape. Hell i think i sold my 2002 for $5300 back in 2010 lol. Last shot the day before i sold her:
go to this link and put in the info to try to get a ballpark price. I would start a little below the lowest price they list and go from there......
