Hello all. I am considering buying this model from a friend. I have never seen one before. Are there any other commonly known issues besides the well known cam oiling problem? Just how rare is this bike? I can't find any production numbers on it. Also, this particular bike I am looking at has a full fairing painted to match the red, white, and blue theme as opposed to the bottom fairing I see on most Interceptors. Was this a factory option? Or aftermarket only.
I have been a fan of the inline 4 style of UJM ever since I taught myself how to ride on a Honda 750 Four, and then to a Yamaha 650 Maxim. The V4 would be new to me. My school of thought is that being "outdated" takes nothing away from a good machine. So, I already know and don't care that this model won't compare to modern bikes. Thanks.

PLEASE!!! She maybe an Ole-Girl But she isn't antiquated, & there are tried & true Suspension mods that will bring her up to par with the more modern bikes.

There is conflicting information out there about the top end oiling issue in regards to the 500 and 1000 as to whether it is a problem with those displacements. It is a known issue with the 700 and 750 though.

I wouldn't say that it is a rare bike. What would be rare is finding one in pristine condition. Do you have any pictures that you can post? How about mileage?

The full fairing was an aftermarket option. Lockhart made a color matched fairing back in the day and I believe there were others. AirTech still sells unpainted fairings, but I'm not sure that they offer one for the 1000F.

That is a great philosophy. Keep that in mind and you'll be fine. Not to take anything away from these bikes, but if you rode it back to back with a modern day VFR, there is a huge difference in every category. Just enjoy it for what it is. Good luck and let us know if you get the bike.

    Well stated !!

You need to get a ride on a newer bike before dropping ca$h on an antique without good parts support and little market interest. In practical terms, newer bikes are so much better you'd need to see for yourself.

The bike is part of my friends collection. It's old school racy look of the front fairing got my attention amongst all the others lined up in his workshop. It has 18K on the clock, appears to be in great shape under the dust, and has had all the carbs redone he tells me. He suggests I change out all the fluids since it has sat for approximately 5 years. It can be mine for $1K even if I want it, and I don't have to be in a hurry to get it. So, right now I am in the research phase to see if I might have stumbled upon something really cool.

Probably not so cool, you'd be better off passing on it at $1K, sounds like a crazy price. These old bikes aren't worth the hassle and he's probably just trying to pass off his problems to you.

BTW, can you give me your friend's contact info and location?

Ahh yes the old gen 1 debate. Remember these bikes(VF750F) were the super bike champ from 83-85. So I guess they are junk and can't be a good bike. If one knows what their weakness is, all bikes have a weakness of some type, they can be a great reliable and fun ride.

Please let me know where this bike is. For a grand I'll buy it if it's in the shape you say it is site unseen. My VF750F has 63k on it with original cams and 95 percent of the original parts. I've been from Key West to New England, up and down the east coast many times, as far west as Montana/Wyoming with out one problem during any of the trips. I'm looking to do a trip next year to the west coast and back if I can scratch up some doe.

I've also ridden/raced in the mountains of NC/Tenn area this past May with guys from another group. They had newer bikes 87VFR from Japan, 20011 1000 ninja and 2011 1000 triumph triple. The old Gen1 held it's own in all the twisties and even led at times and these guys could ride hard. Though being down on power compared to the rest they kicked my ass on the straights. If I had a 1000cc 115 hp VF motor that wouldn't have happened as much.

So tell me again where this bike is at. I'd love to have a 1000 VF motor to put in my 750. Or if you or anybody knows of a 1000 motor/bike to be had for a good price.

Not the 1000's, they for sure have the problem.

Many people don't realize that the VF1000F's are actually much more rare than the VF1000R's in the US.

I think that's a great price, if this was near me I'd scoop it up in a heartbeat. This is a great bike for someone that enjoys working on bikes, and not a great bike for someone who just wants to ride.

Jamie - what's your opinion about the 500?
