It is equally clear that outlawing motorcycles would save lives.

Not a fan of these laws.
Riding on a public roadway is a privilege, not a right. You have responsibilty to your family and friends that you do everything to make sure you survive an accident.
HOG owners that think their rights are being infringed upon if they have to wear more than a leather vest and skull cap need to get a clue. A helmetless couple on a Harley just died by my house a couple months ago in a low speed intersection accident.
HOG owners do seem to cull themselves from the gene pool but I see more and more helmetless riders on sport or sportier bikes now.

Not a fan of the "law" but a first time bike owner/rider at lets just say the ripe age of 18 or so would hop on a bike withoot a thought of putting a helmet on........you can write the rest of the story yourself with little or no imagination.

Not misguided at all, just tired of the hyperbolic argument of the so called "slippery slope".

The ONLY slippery slope I have found to be true is ( and my lovely wife and I have a new and better lube ) is when we go "all asian anal" as I call it :).

Come on, your example is extreme and hyperbolic. Not the point of what the subject matter is about.

So the old "exit only" excuse is merely a canard?

Well I dont know how it works at your house Knife, but here whenever I have the urge to do something ornery involving lube I'm required to shriek CRY HAVOC AND LET SLIP THE DOGS OF WAR. She then runs from the room and I put the TV back on football.

just wear a fukin helmet if you care about not cracking your skull wide open. Who cares if the gov says you have to do it or not? The gov says you cant...i dont know...smoke crystal meth?? And the reason us sensible people dont smoke crystal meth has nothing to do with whether the gov says its ok or not.

Living on the border of two states, neither requiring a lid, one requiring a eye protection only, I am all for it. Again, bring out the "oh my gosh" and the "AGTATT" but I don't always believe in it. Just my opinion, my life, and too much government. Is it really better to be wearing one of those 1/2 cap helmets or none at all? There cannot be that much protection to it. So why do they make them? It's still a lid, but does not protect your nose, chin, mouth, ears, base of your brain, anything other than you pirouetting down the street on the top of your head. Same goes for the open face, but at least it has a better chance with your ears and the base of your brain. How many people do you see or know of that use a hammer without safety goggles? that's OSHA rules. Hammers (steel) does break, I've heard of the aftermath. Not good when it hits you in the eye. I don't like wearing a lid in traffic. It's like driving with blinders on and heavy duty ear plugs. Can't see, can't hear. But I do take things safely. If it's too hairy out there for a motorcyclist, find some back streets or get out to the country.

Yes, the seat-belt thing was passed because of the Federal government sticking their nose into state affairs, stating that if they didn't pass it they would not be eligible for funding of other things down the road, so down our throats it was forced. Big Brother at it's best.

SO, let the flaming begin, I'm used to it, I've got my flame retardant undies on.

No. - Every time the helmet law debate arises some fucking retard says "They're taking away our freedom!", which is utter bullshit. It is the dumbest possible argument anyone could offer.
It seems that some people do not understand what freedom is. Freedom is NOT the absence of rules or regulations. Freedom can ONLY exist within boundaries, or it is no longer freedom, it is simply chaos.

Some states like the one I live in have a "head injury surcharge" added to moving violations. Last time i knew it was around $50.00. The money from the surcharge goes into a fund to help pay for a variety of accident related costs. I should note that Massachusetts requires the use of DOT approved helmet. The point is that someone ends up paying the medical costs of others.

So who really pays for some idiot that chose not to wear a helmet and became a vegetable after wrecking their bike?
