The OEM chain now has 23k+ miles on it. It frequently needs adjusting so I feel it's time to replace.

Although they don't appear damaged or badly worn I'm also thinking of replacing the drive sprockets so here's my thoughts: Regina OEM Chain and Sprocket Kit ($201.00) or DID 530VX X-Ring Chain ($144.00) and hunt down sprockets elsewhere. I don't feel the Regina is really OEM but should be close. Regina is a "z" ring series whereas the DID is an "x".

Another thread stated the 6th gen are 16/43 sprockets but the manual shows 17 up front. I haven't taken things apart to count the teeth on the bike.

Don't know about the Regina but have heard nothing bad about the DID.

    Thanks,

    Reg

I think the OEM chains are made by DID. Atleast that is what i have on my bike. I think 16/43 is the correct sprockets. Do a search in sprocketcenter.com.

Sprocketcenter.com there is a new set with the new VX chain. Change the whole set. Frt/rear sprockets and chain.
Get the set its easy and quality. First set from these guys was AFAM (good quality) front and a Drive systems rear plus D.I.D VM chain. This latest one was AFAM front and rear and D.I.D VM chain.

02-09 shold all be 16/43. If you do go about buying components individually, it will most likely cost more but you will be doing so for some perceived quality difference etc. if you do then look at a supersprox rear sprocket.

I did check there and may order sprockets from them. I like the idea of staying OEM. Good suggestion regarding sprockets.com.

OK I'm sold. Thanks to all. Another question: would going to a higher duty rated chain last significantly longer on this bike. Say installing a VM2 (1300cc rated) or VMX (1400 cc.)?

Personally I would stay with the OEM specifications. 20 - 25K miles is plenty enough for me from a chain and I will replace it at that time even if it is good.

Sprocketcenter kits are a lot cheaper with good quality compared to 300 from a dealer..

You will be paying more and not getting much in return. The chains you're looking at are already rated up to 1000cc bikes and we are only 781. We are not stressing the chain with our bikes even haulng my fat behind around. If there was any longevity to be had with more tensil strength, it would most likely be cancled out by binding in the links and wear in sprockets over time so IMO save yer money, get kit and go riding.
When you take off your old chain you may find yourself surprised by the rough condition of your chain and may wish you changed it earlier.

I would highly advise steel sprockets over the cheaper aluminum sprockets due to the much longer life.

Just last week I bought a DID 530 110 link chain on Ebay for $114 shipped.
Also bought a 16T front sprocket for $25 shipped.
And bought a Superlite 43T steel rear sprocket for $54 shipped.

All total, still less than $200 shipped.
I did see a guy with a nice setup for sale on VFRDiscussion.com for $180 shipped. Not sure if he still has it for sale or not though.

Is the 110 link chain long enough. I thought the 6th gen had 117 link specs but I could be wrong. Going to have to go check that out now cause I will be in need of a new chain and sprocket set soon.

I should have specified that it was the DID X-ring, in gold, if that matters.

I am running the same Regina and OEM kit, 3k on it now no signs of premature wear. Just lube it and tension it correctly. Also, I'm not using the rivet master link, just a clip style. No issues either. The kit only comes with a rivet link, u need the tool to finish the job.

Just bite the freaking bullet and buy a chain tool! You can get a half arse one from motion pro for $100+ ??? or if you really wana step up to something that you can give your grand kids, get a EK Chain Tool, I gots mine from Competition Cycles of Troy NY for $200 or so...comes in a far out cosmic blue metal box, the Japanese dont mess around (tool is made in Japan.) Cheers...he who dies with the most tools wins IMG_20130403_134832.jpg
