stupidly filled trank with diesel. I've dranied it and washed it out a few times with fresh petrol. However, decided not to tamper with fuel system, preferring to flush the system by cranking over the engine on the starter. I got it to start and run for a bit, but it's not working. Worried now that I might be ruining the starter motor. I think ther cat has had it too. Anyone with similar woes in the past that could shed some light?

Well, I'm sure we've all done our share of boneheaded maneuvers.

I don't have anything helpful to offer, but good luck in getting it sorted out.

This is a first I have heard anyone doing this. If I were you.I would call your local bike shop and get there advice. Here in the States all diesel pump handles are green. Good luck

Not always. My boss filled up his diesel truck with gas because a station had handles colored differently (and him not paying attention obviously)

I believe the diesel handle was black and gas was yellow at that station. Next time I ride by I'll have a look.

Diesel in a gas engine is not a big deal. Gas in a diesel is catastrophic however.

It was a common practice to loosen stuck rings on a gas engine buy pouring diesel down the carb while it was running until the engine stalled and then letting it sit for a few days.

But anyway, that doesn't address the OPs concern about cranking the starter endlessly trying to purge the diesel.

It would seem to me that the fuel rail needs to be drained or you will be cranking for the next month.

+1 on draining the rail, it should fire quickly after it is purged.

I think the worse case scenario is that your plugs are going to foul but that should burn off in maybe a few minute once you get good gas through. You are likely to see white smoke out the back until the diesel is burned off. Maybe your plugs are too fouled to stay running that long. Pull them and clean them well and put them back in and try again. Your started motor should take a lot more than what it needs to get the bike running again. But of course, don't over heat the thing. Try for a while then give it time to cool. I have never had any problems with my starter and it has turned over enough to put substantial miles on the bike.

Years back I worked at a fuel depot where contractors were a huge part of our customer base. I remember one who had an old GMC truck and flat deck trailer for trailering around an excavator. A kid that worked there one time filled that puppy up with diesel not realizing it was a gasoline engine. Poor little fugger was puking all day he swallowed so much fuel siphoning out something like 200 gallons of diesel.

Good luck. I am sure this is a mistake never to be repeated.

Buying car parts and bike parts is a standard practice here in America - You simply tell the little woman that you bought such and such part because it was needed. End of story, it doesnt matter that such and such part cost $1000.00 or $100.00. It simply gets dismissed as man stuff, unless your married to a real bean counter, then you have to be more creative. Tools are another easy purchase, Good luck with the bike.

Did you run the bike after adding diesel to the tank ? If yes, then you will need a complete fuel system drain.
If you did NOT, then simply draining the fuel tank & flushing it out with some fresh petrol, then refill with Petrol & the bike should be fine.

A friend of mine did this to her SuperHawk. Had to have the injectors cleaned. She wasn't paying attention as well. From what she said it ran for a few blocks before it finally stopped running. I guess it smoked like a MF until it did die. Had to replace the plugs, clean the tank out, I don't know what long-term problems it had because she shortly traded it in on a RC51 after that.
