wouldnt an autotune and PCV bring MPG roughly back to stock or is stock somehow over-lean?

It is my understanding that the stock map is on the lean side to meet the emission requirements, which comes at the expense of drivability. The Power Commander is capable of increasing or reducing the air/ fuel ratio depending on the map you load. In the case of the PC V, the auto tune module constantly monitors and adjusts the A/F ratio to obtain the optimal map.

Once installed, the Auto Tune kit monitors the fuel mixture (by installing the included Wide Band O2 sensor in the exhaust). It then sends this information to the Power Commander V and automatically corrects it while you ride. Each map that we offer has preset Air/Fuel ratio values included that we find to be the best overall settings. This lets you simply plug in the unit and let it do the work.

thanks jethro. fwiw i am sure i get low 30's, stock-ish on a 2002abs. i havent commuted yet on it so im not measuring, or sparing the horses when i ride it, but that's about to change so i have considered the autotune to steady out whatever configuration i have inheritted from the prev owners.

Finally got around to checking my fuel consumption again. Yesterday I enjoyed a 517Km day run in the Jura Mountains on the far side of Lake Geneva chasing two mates on litre plus bikes who were not hanging about, whilst climbing up and down some crazy steep roads. Brimmed tank before starting, had a midpoint refill, and topped up the tank on return. After converting Km to miles and litres to UK gallons - I managed a very respectable 51.07 MPG. NB If you are using US gallons then the numbers will be lower.

Basically unmodified 2007ABS model but fitted with a French (100hp ECU) which is meant to be a lot more frugal than the UK models putting out 107hp. Certainly have never really noticed the missing 7 ponies.

Hi skimad! I'm often on the Lausanne lake roads to enjoy myself, especially during hot summer, there weather is softened alot by lake waters....what about meeting, say, halfway down the two lakes, for a cheer.....? Have a good time.

Highway trip yesterday was 11.2 liters for 200km = approx 42mpg.
    Averaged 90 km/hr - 50mph, did not go past 6500 rpm

Over Memorial Day weekend took a trip, 300 miles each way. On the way down, with headwind, two construction zones(and what the hell is wrong with people in Fort Worth? Closed shoulders are NOT reason for screwed-up traffic), Fort Worth afternoon near-downtown traffic, and getting caught in the rain, just shy of 42mpg.

On the way back, no rain, less traffic and a little tailwind, 54mpg. Both ways that's doing 70-80 as much as traffic/conditions/lack of cars with blinky lights allowed.

I will note, few months back put a set of Michelin Pilot Road 3 tires on; knowing I had good wet-conditions rubber was very comforting in that bloody Fort Worth traffic in the rain. And the Frog Toggs rainsuit worked very well.

I have never been one to ride for fuel economy, so I must confess I dont keep track except for by the odometer and idiot light.

Don't specifically ride for MPG, keep track for two reasons:
Curious how it does in that respect under the conditions, and
If it drops under similar conditions, might be a warning of a problem.

That's how it started, now it's habit.

Ihaven't been keeping a score but running on 97 ocyane and keep out of the vtec most of the time gives me more than 260kms per tankful, not totally impressed with that as my old 2007 blackbird easily got 300+ plus on a tankful, but bigger tank and I suspect the final gearing was higher.
strangely enough although some say the gearing on the vtec 8oo is low I still have to slip the clutch too often when poodling around in 2nd gear.
Hopefully on the road when the long awaited part arrives will try and do a more accurate assessement!

I use an app for my iPhone called "Gas Cubby" where I track each fill-up. The average for 35 fill-ups is 36.3 mpg. All my riding is back road twisties, I stay off the freeways.

I get around 40-MPG after replacing the (stuck half open) thermostat. It seems later model years get better MPG than the 2002/2003 years?

    Think mine's shagged.
03 Staintunes -1 on the front. And I'm yet to better 140 miles to a tank since I've had it (only a few months)
Also everyone talks about the bikes running lean - my exhaust always has a bit of soot in it (13.5K miles)...
