Setting valve tolerences on my 84 700f

    Hey everyone, I just set the valves on my 84 700f she has 42000 on the motor. I set them at oo6. like the Honda factory manual says. But did not go by the stator marks as the pistons were not at tdc.. I used a dial gauge to find tdc and set them. Most were a few thousands tight. everything else looks good , cams and cam chain tension. I now have way too ticking from the valves / rockers. I am going to install an oiling kit I found on ebay but I need to get this issue resolved first. any input would be great. I don't have the cam tool and have seen posts with it not being used. Should I go by the stator marks even if the pistons are not TDC. The stator can not be off as it keyed. In other words FOLLOW THE MANUAL!! I'll be doing it myself this time too many opinions otherwise. Thanks!!

    Setting clearances (not tolerances) can be done as long as the cam lobes are pointing AWAY from the valves and on the back of the cam, whether the pistons are at exact TDC or not. The flywheel marks are critical for setting valve timing but not so much for clearances.

    Did you see wear such as pitting, scoring, or blueing on the cam lobes ??

    there are a few small blueing patches but no scoring or pitting. The adjuster screws should back out when the locking nut is loosened. I have another complete set of heads with valves and cams. I'm going to do some comparison checks with those adjustment screws and see if they are of the norm.

    Look at the screw bottoms, and if they're seriously mashed and distorted, it's hard to adjust clearances; so see if you can replace them or only use the best ones you have.

    Yes, I went thru everything again yesterday including checking the screws and they are all good. set the clearances at .006 and torqued the adjuster nuts to 19 ft. lbs. I'm ordering an oil mod tomorrow. Repacking the set of F1 slipons I have. Installing those and that will be it for this year unless something else comes up. I wish there was another Vf around to compare engine noise to. I'll keep an eye out this summer for another 1st. Gen Vfour. Full synthetic may be another thing to think about. A good friend of mine was running three Ducati's with Pantah engines in the CCS series and was buying crank bearing buy bulk until he switched to synthetic. Rehashing my work...When the pistons are TDC and the cams are facing up...all valves closed there should be .006 play in the rocker arms in other words they should be a little loose and movement up and down can be felt. Am I correct?

    Noobs need to know that tightening the locknut usually changes the clearance setting just a tiny bit, so recheck again after tightening it.

    just me of course, but rather than spending $$$ for an oil mod for an old '84 VF with over 40k, i'd just start saving up for a newer bike.

    I know what you are saying but when you put insurance, possibly payments into account I can buy allot of parts . I bought a 99 ZX 1100 back in 02, insurance full coverage was close to $1000 per year and I had to change the rear tire every 4000 miles. Not to mention pipe , jet and Dyno. My thoughts...everybody has a new bike... It's more fun to go fast on a slow bike than go slow on a fast bike.:cool:
