So I have been on the site for a little while and went through a couple of miniceptors, VF500's. they were fun but just a tad too tiny for me. Kind of caught the interceptor bug, and wanted another project. So a quick look online and 300 bucks later, I got my project.

Owner says it runs. We'll see about that, but first I'm going to be replacing the blown rec/reg he was kind of enough to tell me about right as I was about to agree on a price (he knocked a hundred off). I know, the fairings are going to be a pain to source and expensive too. But I wanted a project and I love the front end on these VFR's. Will be updating as the parts start rollling in. Cant wait to hear it rumble.

Yeah, the only thing I cant decide on is whether or not I should make it red or try a RWB theme. I like the granite color, but I hate purple on bikes, and I wouldnt be able to stand that purple VFR lettering my bike.

Have a problem getting any kind of electrical power. Battery shows 12 volts but I get nothing when I turn the switch. All the fuses are good, even the 30a one by the battery. All the grounds seem to be good. Am I missing another big fuse somewhere?

Always fun to start with a clean slate! Good luck with your bike. I've always loved the Red/White/Blue on interceptors - my wife had an RWB VF500 when I met her. Keep us posted on your build.

Regarding your issue with the electrical system send me a PM and we can discuss.

I got ride of the purple on the mids because they were painted, uppers-mids-lowers. Tail and gas tank are original, I read somewhere that purple was the colour of royalty and it was also associated with manic depression...Love my Gen 3 bike!

Fairings from Airtech (fiberglass) and poly26 (grey fiberglass) and maybe someone over in UK. Windscreen from several places.

    Buy an aftermarket seat.

    4th gen for exhaust system.

Now would be a good time for shock and fork upgrade.

tech manual available here for download, needed.

    Good luck,

    Larry

Do you have a link for that manual? Did a search and the best I could find was for a 4th gen 95 year.

Found the problem with my electrical dilemmas. pulled the starter relay, found the burned out fuse. I am a moron:doh: I looked for that thing for 2 days and couldnt figure it out. I didnt realize that the fuse was down under the protective rubber dust seal and wedged in between the connector and the relay body. I changed the spare fuse out of its holder.... of course the bike started right up and idled really well. After I warmed it up, I tried riding it around for a minute and found that the engine would bog down almost immediately after releasing the clutch no matter how high I revved it. I got it up to about 6-7k and that just barely moved me. Is there an adjustment for the clutch or is it fried or what? also, I plan on changing the oil. Checked on here and there seems to be a huge variety that people swear by. So, if anyone could also chime in and let me know what the factory oil weight is, I would appreciate it greatly. thanks again.

so the seafoam seems to have made a difference. The bike revs freely and nicely all the way up to redline. The wheel bearings are fried. It was always a pain to push the bike up and down the driveway, so I sprayed some wd-40 in there just to see if it would loosen up. It did, so now while I'm doing the brakes, I will send the wheels off for new bearings. That would explain why I couldnt really ride it, why it seemed to be fighting itself when I had it in gear. The brakes are prob sticking too. That will get addressed as well.

has anyone replaced the wheel bearings themselves or is it better to just take the wheels somewhere for that?

also, I'm having an issue with the throttle and right hand controls. They dont seem to want to clamp down all the way, no matter how I orient them around the handlebar. Are they supposed to line up a certain way so that they are able to be tightened? First pic is of the bars and how they were set up. As you can see the right hand/throttle seems to be clamped on farther out than the left controls.

    Here it is up close...

and here it is when I move it inboard, I am not able to clamp the control, this binds the throttle tube and lets the control slip, not cool.

There's a little pin in the lower half of the controls that fits into a hole on the underside of the bar. It's difficult to see when attempting to line it up. If that isn't lined up correctly, it won't go on properly. It's a PITA to put on when the cables are snug.
